We are looking to hire a Senior Manager, Tax Controversies to our team. Microsoft Tax & Customs Department is responsible for Worldwide Tax & Customs Reporting, Compliance, and Planning, including the technology and process & innovation functions to support the coordination of the worldwide tax and Customs functions. There are four major functions within the Tax and Customs Department:

  • Tax Reporting and Transfer Pricing
  • Customs, Tax Process & Innovation
  • Corporate Tax Planning & Controversies, Indirect Tax & Global Business Initiatives
  • Tax & Customs Controllership, Policy and Benefits Taxation

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tax, Law, or related field AND 6+ years tax experience

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Effective organizational skills, a sense of urgency, self-initiative and ability to multi-task are required to successfully manage the deadline-driven audit process.
  • Effective people and communications skills are required when requesting and reviewing complex and confidential information provided by companywide internal Microsoft teams.
  • Ability to provide information to tax examiners in a tactical manner, while maintaining a professional and cordial relationship.
  • Dependable working knowledge of computer applications is required to manage data and documents.
  • Ability to effectively research and analyze federal and state tax regulations and case law.

Tax IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $91,800 - $178,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $117,900 - $195,000 per year.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate to manage U.S. federal and state income tax audits, including responding to Information Document Requests (IDRs) and Notices of Proposed Adjustments (NOPAs).
  • Work to be technically advanced and build relationships to successfully defend the tax issues under IRS and state government examination.
  • Assist with developing arguments in support of Microsoft's tax positions and effectively negotiate resolutions of IRS and state government assessments during the audit, appeals and litigation phases.
  • Partner with outside service providers on strategically navigating issues through the appeals and litigation procedures, and efficiently manage professional fees.
  • Collaborate to manage the Financial Product transactions under examination, including negotiating the scope of requests and working with the Treasury Tax Director and the Treasury team to effectively present Microsoft's treasury activities.
  • Team with the reporting and provision groups on preparing the annual R&D (research & development) tax credit study, quarterly provision estimates, and partnership/acquisition tax credits.
  • Assist with plan ning and participating in meetings with various Microsoft stakeholders.
  • Manage large volumes of data and documents.
