Summary The purpose of this position is to perform construction and maintenance work in support of the goals and mission of the Construction, Storm water, or Streets Programs. This position is based in the Public Works Department. THIS POSITION MAY CLOSE WITHOUT NOTICE This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. This position is driving essential and subject to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Policy. Essential Functions Performs streets, construction, and storm water maintenance and improvement activities Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools Assists with inclement weather and special event response Perform other duties as required Supervision Exercised This position may serve as lead worker, performing essentially the same work as those directed, and may oversee work quality, train, instruct, and schedule work. Physical Demands The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, or stooping; occasionally lifting heavy objects; and using equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Work Environment The work is typically performed in the field with exposure to inclement weather, traffic, insects, noxious vegetation, dust, vibration, noise, and fumes. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Advanced construction methods and practices in assigned program Advanced medium to heavy equipment maintenance and operation Ability to: Communicate effectively orally and in writing Lead coworkers and perform advanced tasks Operate equipment related to the program Perform preventive maintenance on equipment Perform street and storm water system construction and maintenance activities Operate a computer and basic software programs Operate highly skilled heavy equipment maintenance and operation Model behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECT Education High school diploma or equivalency or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties. Experience Five years of job-related experience Certification Possession of or ability to readily obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL issued by the State of North Carolina and successful completion or ability to readily obtain the Competent Person Certification in Shoring and Trenching or Confined Space Rescue.
