About the Opportunity: The Senior Fermentation Scientist will join our Upstream Bioprocess Development team and will be responsible for the design & execution of fermentation experiments for development of new bioprocesses. The person will play a leading technical role in project management of fermentation programs within the group. In addition, the Sr. Scientist will be responsible for tech transferring bioprocesses to CRO/CMOs. They will collaborate cross functionally with members of the Technical Operations team. In this role you will be responsible for:
  • Lead the development of new fermentation bioprocesses utilizing E. coli as an expression host for production of enzymes for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing & Life Science applications.
  • Hands-on running bench-scale bioreactors (250 mL, 2 L, & 10 L), performing bench experiments, and providing mentorship/management to other team members within the bioprocess group.
  • Lead the authorship of tech transfer packages and transferring processes to CRO/CMOs.
  • Perform Design of Experiments (DOEs) and data analysis with strong scientific and statistical rigor.
  • Supervising Research Associates & Engineers in the bioprocess development group.
  • Following safety best practices and leading implementation of new safety processes.
  • Routinely present technical information to various audiences both internal and external to Bioprocess Development & Codexis.


The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience; M.S or B.S. with at least 8-10 years relevant experience, respectively.
  • Strong understanding of microbial physiology (with a focus on E. coli) and its intersection with fermentation processes at bench scale ( 10L).
  • Previous hands-on experience with bench scale fermentation for production of recombinant proteins in E. coli.
  • Experience with leading multiple fermentation-focused projects simultaneously and technical program management.
  • Experience utilizing graphical software (JMP, R, Python, or similar) and motivated in handling large data sets from high throughput fermentation platforms to make data-driven decisions.
Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes:
  • Previous experience working with and providing oversight to CRO/CMOs.
  • Experience working under a quality system (e.g. ISO, GMP) or manufacturing experience/exposure.
  • Hands-on experience with primary recovery of enzymes and knowledge of downstream purification unit operations.
  • Knowledge of automation systems and using liquid handling equipment and assays to support fermentation process analytics.
  • Experience managing/mentoring Engineers, and Research Associates performing fermentation process development workflows.

CODEXIS PAY TRANSPARENCY: The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Redwood City is $138,500 to $170,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Codexis is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states .
