Job Purpose
Developing and executing product and business strategy in a world of rapid technological and social change requires a highly capable, highly knowledgeable, and highly engaged team. To achieve this vision, Honda needs to ensure that all of our energy use across Scopes 1, 2, 3 comes from zero carbon sources.
The Senior Clean Energy Specialist is an energy professional responsible for leading the development of Honda's clean energy strategy and project procurement consistent with Honda's risk tolerance and energy needs. Honda seeks to supply new zero carbon energy in the markets where our operations, our EV and FCEV product customers, our suppliers, and dealers use that energy. The specialist will develop a portfolio of clean energy based on evolving company strategy and new product needs. This will include the identification, evaluation, and approval of projects that align with company direction and risk tolerance including VPPA, offsite, onsite, and utility programs. The ideal candidate will be passionate about decarbonizing energy supply and will have clean or renewable energy project development experience with a strong understanding of energy market regulations and contract structures.


Key Accountabilities

Strategy Development:

  • Lead strategy development for Honda's ongoing clean energy needs across Honda's own facilities (on-site, off-site, utility tariffs, etc).
  • Develop strategies to address EV product in-use (home solar, community solar, utility tariffs, VPPAs, etc)
  • Develop strategies to address Scope 3: Suppliers, Dealers, and Logistics Electrification

Risk Mitigation:

  • Identify contract risk mitigation opportunities, including hydrogen generation, energy storage, and contractual risk mitigation strucutres.
  • Project Selection:
  • Lead the identification, negotiation, evaluation, and consensus building for new clean energy opportunities based on company evolving needs.
  • Develop detailed proposals with clean energy developers for on-site, near-site, and off-site generation facilities.
  • Analyze proposals and the business models and cost structures behind the proposals in depth to understand the full financial dimensions of the projects, using detailed scenarios to frame the financial risks of the proposals.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Engage key stakeholders (Legal, Finance, Procurement) to ensure identified opportunities conform to company governance requirements
  • Ensure that stakeholders are well informed of risks and opportunities, schedules, and key results
  • Secure senior leadership approval for execution of identified clean energy opportunities

Utility Outreach:

  • Engage with utilities and regulators in the regulatory process to develop new clean energy opportunities
  • Develop proposals for green tariffs
  • Community Engagement:
  • Engage with community leaders, government officials, and members of communities where Honda operates to gain support for clean energy projects

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in business, sustainability, engineering or related field
  • A minimum of seven years experience in renewable energy agreement development
  • Experience representing company interest to senior leadership
  • Experience working with renewable energy project financial models and identifying associated risks
  • Experience in leading negotiations
