JOB SUMMARY
To set-up and operate one or more multiple spindle screw machines equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to perform turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on metal bar stock to produce complex machined parts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Sets up and operates one or more multiple spindle screw machines, as directed, equipped with automatic indexing and feeding mechanisms to perform turning, boring, threading, and facing operations on metal bar stock.
  • Analyzes specifications and determines tooling requirements according to knowledge of screw machine operations.
  • Plans the sequencing of machine operation by studying the blueprint and other specification information, and visualizing the required machining part dimensions and permissible tolerances.
  • Decides on station and timing of each operation to assure efficient use of tools and time by visualizing the movements of machine parts, work pieces and tools in each operation in relationship to each other.
  • Verifies cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cuts, and cutting tools to be used based on knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics and machine experience.
  • Installs collets, bushings, and stock pushers in stock feeding mechanism, using wrenches and screwdrivers.
  • Installs and verifies cams and gears and adjusts stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.
  • Positions and secures tools in tool holders verifying positions with gauges and other measuring instruments.
  • Manually moves machine through the cycle, stopping the machine and adjusting tool positions and machine controls to allow for such factors as timing, clearance between moving parts, and chip removal.
  • Reviews set-up to ensure that appropriate safety guards and switches are in place.
  • Starts machine, observes operation, and verifies conformance to specifications of first piece sample using instruments such as plug and ring gauges, calipers, and micrometers; operates machine for a designated period of time to ensure conformity to the part specifications.
  • Operates bench and surface grinders to sharpen tools and replaces worn tools as required.
  • Utilizes statistical process control techniques in setting up and operating the machines.
  • Assists supervisory personnel in instructing and training operators and explains machine set-ups and production run information to operators, as necessary.
  • Operates one or more screw machines, as directed, to produce machined parts in accordance with the manufacturing schedule.
  • Coordinates machine set-ups with Engineering Maintenance, Quality Control, Tool Supply, Plant Services, and other departments, as required.
  • Assists in analyzing, diagnosing, and troubleshooting machine smash-ups, machine and tool wear, and downtime, as directed.
  • Participates in Total Quality Management (TQM) and TS-16949 Teams to improve product quality, as requested.
  • Observes all safety and housekeeping rules and procedures and supports and encourages safety and good housekeeping throughout the company; takes immediate action on safety related issues.
  • Supports management policies and procedures; cooperates with and supports other company employees; and works reliably and flexibly to meet departmental, company, and customer needs and objectives including quality and productivity.
  • In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed above, the Level II person is responsible for assisting in the engineering process and recommends process improvements. The Level II person is expected to have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to independently perform the positional duties and responsibilities without supervisory direction or assistance.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises other manufacturing employees on an occasional or part-time basis, as required.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include supervising, training employees, providing technical information via coaching and coordinating and directing work, as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduate or GED or the equivalent level knowledge and capability in reading, writing, physics, technology fundamentals, communications, and applied mathematics (shop math).
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and physical dexterity, including proficiency in determining spatial relationships pertaining to complicated machines, tools, and machine parts.
  • A minimum of one year experience in the precision manufacturing/machining industry, as a machine operator (screw machine preferred) for Level I and a minimum of five years of screw machine set-up for a Level II position.
  • Requires extensive knowledge in screw machine operation (multi-spindle), blueprint reading, measurement equipment utilization, cutting tool geometry, and a working knowledge in machine maintenance, manufacturing engineering, quality control methods, statistical process control and P.P.A.P. requirements, and problem solving methods.
  • Requires supervisory and training skills and competencies commensurate with the need to direct other personnel on a part-time basis.
