School/College School of Medicine Title School of Medicine - Open Rank - Ophthalmology: Cornea Specialist Assignment Category Full-Time Rank Open Rank Tenure Status Open Tenure Payroll Status Faculty 12 Job Description The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Ophthalmology, has an opening for a Cornea specialist. This position is full-time, tenure or non-tenure earning at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor. Responsibilities include patient care, didactic and clinical training of residents, and opportunities for basic and clinical research. The Cornea clinic is located in Birmingham, Alabama. Cornea surgeries are performed at the Callahan Eye Hospital, (over 13,000+) surgeries are performed per year within 17 operating rooms. The department's practice has rapidly grown into the largest multi-specialty Ophthalmology practice in the state of Alabama. The Department has nearly 50 full- and part-time clinical and research faculty and is based in the Callahan Eye Hospital, part of the UAB Health System. UAB Callahan Eye has 16 eye operating rooms in a dedicated facility and operates a newly expanded network of more than 15 satellite clinics. The UAB Callahan Eye Hospital (CEH) is the only eye specialty hospital in Alabama and one of the few facilities in the world entirely dedicated to advancements in ophthalmology. As such, the hospital is a key service of the UAB Health System and operates the teaching program for the UAB School of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology. The hospital treats over 23,000 ophthalmic patients each year and offers the only 24 hour, 7 day a week eye emergency room in the state and the only Level I Ocular Trauma Center in the region.
