REPORTS TO: Supervisor of School Nurses

SUPERVISES: School Nursing Assistant(s)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As determined by NLPS contract for salaried Nurse PRIMARY FUNCTION: To provide comprehensive school health services for all students and maintain student health records.
RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION:
New London Public Schools' Registered Nurses will act as members of the interdisciplinary team in planning and implementing the health/therapeutic/educational programs of the students.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This description of School Nurse is for identification and administrative purposes only. It is not intended to be a complete statement of all duties, which may be assigned or adjusted by the Superintendent of Schools according to varying needs.
  1. Participate in the planning, evaluation, and promotion of the school health program, including supporting students and families with health-related barriers to learning.
  2. Plan for health care, emergency protocols, and transportation and classroom adaptations for students with special health care needs in coordination with classroom teachers and special education supervisors.
  3. Maintain accurate records using designated student information systems to ensure continuity and accountability of the school health program
  4. Maintain current health records and emergency medical information on all students as required by state regulations.
  5. Facilitate annual completion of State of Connecticut mandated screenings: vision, hearing, and scoliosis, for all students.
  6. Develop individual nursing care plans to meet the cultural, educational, emotional, mental, physical, and social needs of students.
  7. Ensure compliance with IEPs by having medically necessary equipment available as needed.
  8. Adhere to state regulations regarding proper administration and storage of student medication.
  9. Develop policies and procedures to ensure optimum health of all staff and students.
  10. Attend team meetings, including PPTs, as indicated by the student's individual needs.
  11. Provide vaccinations to staff.
  12. Collaborate with agencies within and outside of the community to ensure continuity of service and care for students and families.
  13. Lift and/or restrain students as necessary according to training and district protocols.
  14. Participate in at least 15 hours of professional development, continuing education or activities approved by the local or regional board of education including mandatory training and instruction on implementing IEPs and Secrion 504 plans every two years.
  15. Assume professional responsibilities through membership and active participation in at least one appropriate professional organization annually.
  16. Maintain working relationship with district's medical advisor by consulting with them on health needs of students and actively engaging with them on a regular basis
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current Connecticut RN License
  • Academic requirements as stated in the Connecticut Education Regulations Sec.10-212-2
  • Active CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) and First Aid Certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • One-year appropriate clinical experience within the past three years
  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing
  • School Nurse certification

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Annually by Supervisor of School Nurses

SALARY: 3 different work options available. The workday is 7 hours (6.5 hours of work and .5 hour lunch)
  • 190-day annual work schedule - $75,524.00
  • 192-day annual work schedule - $76,320.00
  • 195-day annual work schedule - $77,513.00

BENEFITS: Benefits for the unaffiliated School Nurse positions are outlined in the annual NLPS' Nursing Agreement. Benefits include health insurance, life insurance, and sick days.
