School Based Health Nurse - Wellness Education Coordinator

Location: St. Augustine Preparatory Academy in Milwaukee

Hours: 1396 hours/year

Responsibilities

  • Apply the nursing process to systematically collect relevant data; identify problem areas and needs; make or facilitate decisions about service delivery; and evaluate the outcomes of service delivery within an educational setting.
  • Communication between Aug Prep, 16th street medical clinic and School Health Based Nurses.
  • Conducts appropriate sick care and renders treatment as indicated.
  • Refers patients to 16th street medical clinic as deemed necessary.
  • Performs emergency treatment in case of serious illness or injury.
  • Provides appropriate health teaching to patients and their families.
  • Maintains appropriate contact with community resources.
  • Participates in regular school health conferences as scheduled.
  • Consultants and collaborate with collaborating physician addressing medical issues presented by the students and in developing practice guidelines.
  • Responds to frequently encountered health issues, provides counseling and crisis intervention when required.
  • Consultants with teachers on health issues and provisions of clinical in-service education as needed.
  • Acts as a backup for ordering and maintaining all medical supplies including but not limited to medications, immunizations.
  • Supervises Carroll University nursing/health science students in the delivery of school-based nursing care.
  • Maintain professional development by attending seminars and training annually to build school nursing skills and evidence-based programs that will support student learning, health, safety, and development.
  • Other duties as assigned to assure the delivery of school health services.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Wisconsin required.
  • Two years of recent nursing experience or 1 year of nursing experience plus directly applicable clinical experience, acquired through school.
  • Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers required.
  • Experience working as a nurse with the Hispanic population and in community or school settings preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Dual Language English/Spanish preferred
  • Experience working with the Hispanic culture.
  • The essential job duties of this position present risk of exposure to body fluids and blood borne pathogens.
  • Annual Bloodborne pathogen training is required.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine is strongly recommended and available at no charge at the health Center. Declination form must be signed if this vaccine is declined.

  • Act as a leader in delivery of care that preserves and protects student and family autonomy, dignity, privacy, and other rights sensitive to diversity in the school setting.
  • Ability to make sound clinical judgements.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a warm and confident manner in person, via phone, and through electronic communications with faculty, medical director, staff, students, and other members of the public.

Office Technology Skills
  • Ability to utilize equipment, office software (ie, Word, Excel, EHR) and web-based applications to meet the needs of staff, co-workers, and Carroll University.
  • Ability to utilize office equipment, prepare correspondence, reports, forms, mailings etc.
  • Willingness and ability to develop necessary skill with relevant tools and software as needed.
