Position involves operation of large refuse collection truck, equipped with compaction units and related sanitation equipment, in the completion of designated collection routes. This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Operates a refuse truck on designated commercial and residential routes emptying containers and placing them back in their proper locations. Dumps the refuse on the work face at landfill, cleans the space behind packer inside the hopper. Changes out containers. Cuts or mows weeds and grass to leave streets, alleys and surrounding property in a clean and sanitary condition. Performs incidental manual work using hand tools such as shovels, pitchforks, rakes and small power tools and mowers, tractors, trucks and other large equipment with attachments such as mowers, loaders, chippers and forklifts (if forklift certified). Repairs wooden, chain-link, and cinder block fences, Performs sewer clean outs in the alley way. Washes, paints and services City equipment and machinery. Cleans, maintains, refuels, inspects, and periodically assists in changing oil, flats and performs minor repairs to vehicles. Submits requests to Shop Division for major repairs. Provides both written and verbal reports on property damage and accidents immediately upon occurrence. Maintains safe operating procedures, being cautious of overhead utilities, gas meters, etc. and of fellow employees. Uses City provided safety wears in accordance to the rules and regulations as stated in the City of Clovis Safety Manual. Minimum Qualifications No specific educational requirement. Must have at least one (1) year experience in the general maintenance and operation of large commercial trucks. Licenses and Certificates Valid New Mexico Class B Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements. Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Maintenance requirements of sanitation equipment. City and Department policies, rules, procedures and safety practices. Principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance. Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in motor vehicle operation. Geography of the community. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, relating to CDL license holders in the performance of safety-sensitive functions. Ability to: Read and comprehend street maps. Learn and follow established routes. Learn and follow City and Department, rules, and procedures. Learn job-related procedures and techniques, primarily through on-the-job training, oral instruction, and observation. Carry out oral and written instructions. Listen and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with co-workers, supervisors, and the public. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Skill in: The use of heavy motorized equipment and generic and specialized tools to perform functions of the positions. Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and motorized equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures. Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment. Inspecting, identifying mechanical problems and maintaining vehicles and specialized equipment. Physical Requirements Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and occasional lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds. Working Conditions Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies. Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions. Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment. Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required
