Summary This position is located at the IHS, GPA Div. of Environmental Health Services, Pine Ridge Service Unit, Office of Environmental Health and Engineering, Pine Ridge, SD. The IHS is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Videos Help Duties Assists and actively participates in designated community Injury Prevention Program (IPP) activities as assigned. Engages in record keeping, development of priorities, identification of resources, and in the implementation and evaluation of IPP interventions. Assists and conducts food service sanitation surveys of IHS, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) institutions, Head Start centers, day care centers, eating establishments, and Tribal celebrations in accordance with Public Health Service standards. Assist with coordinating environmental health activities with other functions of IHS and federal, state, local, and tribal agencies or councils to secure maximum utilization of resources. Assists with conducting periodic inspections of sanitation facilities (water systems, sewage disposal systems, and solid waste disposal systems) for compliance with current recommended practices. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Sanitarian Series 0688 (opm.gov) In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS- 5: Education- A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree, and that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in a science, or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science). OR Experience: Four years of experience in inspectional, investigational, technical support, or other responsible work that provided a knowledge and a fundamental understanding of, and the ability to use, environmental health principles, methods, and techniques equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum. OR A combination of education and experience as described above. GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: inspecting and providing advice for proper food preparation and sanitation; assist with inspecting facilities and water/wastewater systems for compliance with standards and regulations; assists with inspecting institutions such as Head Starts, daycares, schools, ambulatory health care facilities, elderly nutrition programs, and/or business establishments against standards and regulations; assists in preparing written reports to discuss findings and recommendations for environmental health conditions of facilities; and assisting in the development of a comprehensive environmental health program based on the needs of the community. OR 1 full year of graduate level education related to environmental health or superior academic achievement. GS-9: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: independently inspecting and providing advice for proper food preparation and sanitation; inspecting facilities and water/wastewater systems for compliance with standards and regulations; inspecting institutions such as Head Starts, daycares, schools, ambulatory health care facilities, elderly nutrition programs, and/or business establishments against standards and regulations; preparing written reports to discuss finding and recommendations for environmental health conditions of facilities; independently assessing and developing a comprehensive environmental health work plan and program based on the needs of the community; and monitoring data to determine if program objectives are being met and adjusting program direction as necessary. OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to environmental health. Time In Grade: Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
