Purpose Statement

The job of RN Team Leader/School Nurse is done for the purpose of assisting the director, Center for School Nursing Services, with planning, managing, providing, and evaluating school health services in participating school districts to ensure that school districts utilize School Nurse Corps funding to enhance school nursing services to identify and address students' health concerns in the school setting.

This position may serve school sites located in Spokane, Stevens, Ferry, and Pend Oreille counties.

This position is full-time, year-around.

Salary placement will depend on experience and qualifications.
Functions
  • Assists the director in evaluating school health services for the purpose of ensuring the Center for School Nursing Services objectives are achieved in participating districts.
  • Assists the director in providing extensive school health consultation and technical assistance to school nurses, administrators, students and families.
  • Responds to district requests to provide technical assistance regarding policies and statutes, community concerns, and school district or parental requests for the purpose of identifying relevant issues and making recommendations for a plan of action that may resolve the concern.
  • Assists districts, as requested, in their hiring process of school nurses.
  • Orients, mentors, and trains new nurses for the purpose of developing a "best practice" concept for school health services.
  • Assists the director in ensuring department and organizational objectives are achieved in the most efficient and timely manner.
  • Consults with district staff and public health professionals for the purpose of addressing communicable disease control and immunization monitoring.
  • Assists director in planning and facilitating regional meetings with school nurses for the purpose of reviewing new RCW/WACs, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) guidance, Washington Department of Health (DOH) guidance, and other continuing education opportunities that impact practice standards for healthcare provided in schools.
  • Provides site visits to districts for the purpose of ensuring program directives are met and providing school nurse practice guidance and support for school nurses and administrators.
  • Assists school nurses with resources as they develop Individual Health Plans and Emergency Care Plans for students for the purpose of ensuring student health, safety, and compliance with established requirements and promoting family involvement.
  • Assists districts in developing programs, policies, and procedures (e.g. health, safety, etc.) for the purpose of increasing quality control measures for all health related services.
  • Assists school nurses with training regarding medication administration, as requested, for the purpose of ensuring non-licensed staff deliver services in conformance with state and federal regulations.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. site visit reports, spreadsheets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities.
  • Provides consultation, guidance, and assistance to districts, as requested, regarding coordination and implementation of health screenings for the purpose of ensuring services are delivered in conformance with established guidelines.
  • Provides services as directed by the director under the Fee-For-Service contracts with participating districts.
  • Provides direct services as time and resources permit and as approved by the director (e.g. working in health rooms to provide health assessments, treatments, hearing, and vision screenings, etc.) in conformance with state, and federal regulations.
  • Participates, as time and resources permit, as a member of a district multidisciplinary assessment team for the purpose of assessing student health status and making appropriate recommendations for individualized education programs.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
  • adhering to safety practices,
  • administering first aid and CPR,
  • operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications, and
  • preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, speak persuasively to implement desired actions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:
  • pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws,
  • health standards and hazards,
  • safety practices and procedures, and
  • stages of child development.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and events, gather, collate, and classify data, and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and groups, work with a variety of data, and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
  • using and maintaining a variety of nursing assessment tools, including but not limited to stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, glucometer, otoscope, vision and hearing screening tools, thermometer, etc.

General Requirements

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and methods, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the agency's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions.

Experience

Five years of experience as a school nurse is required

Nursing management and leadership experience is preferred

Education

Bachelor's degree in nursing required

Certificates & Licenses

Valid Washington State registered nurse license

Washington State ESA certification (school nurse endorsement) preferred

Valid driver license and required automobile insurance

Reliable personal transportation

First aid/CPR/AED certificate

Bloodborne pathogens training

Clearances

WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee's expense).
