Duty Hours: 40 hours weekly


Purpose of Your Job Position:

The primary purpose of your job position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards. This position aims to maintain the highest quality of care at all times, as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.


Delegation of Authority:

As the Assistant Director of Nursing, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.


Job Functions:

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Administrative Functions:

- Direct the day-to-day functions of nursing activities in compliance with regulations.

- Ensure adherence to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.

- Assist in coordinating nursing services with other resident services.

- Oversee nursing service personnel and their job descriptions.

- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.

- Participate in the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.


Charting and Documentation:

- Fill out and complete accident/incident reports.

- Chart all accidents/incidents involving residents.

- Encourage physicians to review and sign orders, progress notes, etc.

- Chart nurses' notes in an informative and descriptive manner.

- Complete and file required record-keeping forms/carts upon admission, transfer, and/or discharge.


Drug Administration Functions:

- Prepare and administer medications as ordered.

- Verify resident identity before administering medication.

- Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary.

- Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required.

- Review medication records for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policies.


Personnel Functions:

- Inform the DON of staffing needs.

- Develop work assignments and assist in completing tasks.

- Make daily rounds to ensure nursing services personnel adhere to standards.

- Report absentee call-ins to the DON.

- Review and address complaints and grievances from assigned personnel.


Nursing Care Functions:

- Inform nursing personnel of new admissions and expected arrival times.

- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.

- Administer professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, etc.

- Participate in the orientation of new residents/family members.

- Requisition and arrange for diagnostic and therapeutic services.

- Monitor seriously ill residents and notify physicians of changes in condition.


Staff Development:

- Assist in standardizing work methods.

- Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.


Safety and Sanitation:

- Monitor personnel to ensure adherence to safety regulations.

- Maintain work areas in a clean and sanitary manner.

- Ensure resident care areas are clean, safe, and sanitary.

- Participate in the facility's Infection Control Program.


Care Plan and Assessment Functions:

- Notify care plan coordinator of necessary changes to plan of care.

- Ensure nurse's notes reflect that care plans are being followed.


Residents' Rights Functions:

- Maintain confidentiality of resident care information.

- Monitor nursing care to ensure residents are treated fairly and with respect.

- Ensure all nursing care is provided in privacy, and personnel knock before entering rooms.

- Review and address resident complaints and grievances, maintaining a written record.
