DESCRIPTION OF THE BURKE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Burke Scholar Program was founded in 2008 with the goal of providing a Catholic education to a wider range of students, particularly those with developmental, intellectual, cognitive or other significant learning differences. Providing students an education in a Catholic environment is an opportunity to make the Notre Dame community more diverse and is an option for those for whom the usual course of studies may not be appropriate. Notre Dame is one of the first twenty Catholic high schools in the United States to offer a program like this one, and the first in Illinois.

Including students with special needs in Catholic schools is a matter of social justice and fulfilling our core values. Seeking to serve as a model of faith, scholarship and service, Notre Dame College Prep provides students an environment where they can grow spiritually, socially, physically and academically. Developing an inclusive school allows all of the members of our community to grow.

Enrollment in the Burke Scholar Program is limited to fifteen students per year. The student's course of studies is based on his Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or service plan and will include a mix of inclusive courses, small group work, and individualized instruction. Upon completion of the four-year program, the Burke Scholar staff will support the family of each student in identifying the best path for his post-secondary development.

Students who seek admission to the program must have a current IEP or service plan, be capable of self care, have no severe behavioral problems, have a history of being in an educational setting, and have good communication skills. Admission is based in part on an interview.

The Burke Scholar Program is paid for through tuition, with the support of grants, foundations, and private donations. Notre Dame College Prep welcomes contributions, and gifts may be made payable to Notre Dame College Prep and marked for the Burke Scholar Program.
