Position (job title): Research Scientist/Sr. Research Scientist - Pulping Department: R&D Work Site: Technology Center The Pulping Engineer/Scientist role involves technology development as it relates to all aspects of Kraft pulp and DWP, pulp bleaching, fiber modification, best practice unit operations and best practice chemistry application. The successful candidate will work on development of new technology and products to make more environmentally friendly, better performing, and profitable products. They will also work with each business to optimize process efficiency, chemistry applications and work closely with operations to reduce variable costs. Accountabilities: Reports to the Pulping, Fiber and Basesheet Development Group Leader. Responsible for all aspects of fiber selection and fiber development. Responsible for optimizing Kraft and PHK systems, including variability reduction and optimum process conditions. Provides support and technical leadership to strategic projects driven by the needs of the business. Coordinates, executes, implements, and documents complex manufacturing trials. Leads and/or participates on cross-functional teams for cost reduction and product development initiatives. Works with manufacturing to develop performance specifications for pulp mill raw materials. Requirements: PhD, Master's or Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Pulp and Paper Science. Four to eight years of experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment, preferably bleachable grade Kraft pulp and DWP. Ability to work independently or in a team environment, with a proven ability to complete assignments in a timely manner with minimal direction. In depth understanding of Kraft pulping and pulp bleaching (O2 Delignification, Ozone bleaching, traditional ClO2 bleaching). Demonstrated knowledge of wood room and pulp manufacturing equipment, and the interaction between materials and process. Demonstrated skills with regard to the commercial implementation of technology developments. Knowledge and experience with wet end chemistry and paper machine wet end operations a plus.
