The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science invites applications for one Research Associate I position at the NOAA Fisheries-Highly Migratory Species Branch in Panama City, FL. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or higher in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field. The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting field sampling and laboratory analyses supporting the Highly Migratory Species Branch at Panama City Laboratory on projects relevant to elasmobranch ecological research and fisheries science. Duties will include preparation of boats and sampling gear for field work; participation in field operations to determine abundance and habitat use of sharks and sawfish, cleaning and storage of boat and sampling equipment. The Research Associate will also assist and conduct life history analysis of sharks and fish through sectioning samples (e.g., otoliths, vertebrae) using Isomet or Hillquist saws and ageing/analyzing biological samples using established methods and equipment. Additional duties include data entry; data management and analysis; and assist in the preparation of reports. The successful candidate must have a thorough working knowledge of common computer applications for word processing and database management (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel). The Research Associate I (RA-I) will work directly within the Highly Migratory Species Branch in SEFSC-Panama City on specified projects in support of research goals and objectives of the SEFSC and NOAA Fisheries.
