Research Assistant Professor Department of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology A Research Assistant Professor position is available in the Department of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology at West Virginia University. This is a full-time, non-tenure track, time limited, faculty position designed for an individual with a strong track record of research achievement in the field of Pulmonary Immunology and Inhalation Toxicology. The primary function of the position will be to support the research activities of the department, the Center for Inhalation Toxicology, and the institution by utilizing the individuals specialized skills, knowledge and experience within an established research program, and to cultivate an independent research theme. The candidate will become a part of the research team headed by Dr. Salik Hussain in the Department of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology. The main experimental approaches used in the lab are Pulmonary function assessments, organoid cultures of airways and alveolar stem/progenitor cells, redox assay, Air liquid interphase cultures and exposures, inhalation exposures to environmental and occupational toxicants. The group undertakes several projects focused on understanding the mechanisms that underlie impact of environmental exposures (Ozone, Mixed ultrafine carbon and ozone exposures, particulate matter, nanoparticles and burn pit exposures) on pulmonary disease susceptibility. Key responsibilities for this position include: 1. Devise, plan, document and perform experiments both at the basic science and translational levels in the relevant research area. 2. Generate data for grant applications, prepare manuscripts for publication, and present scientific findings. 3. Work in close collaboration with Dr. Hussain and other team members, members of the Center for Inhalation Toxicology, as well as other collaborators. 4. Train and supervise post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and technical staff. 5. It is anticipated that the candidate will secure extramural funding after three years. A Ph.D. in Biological or Biomedical Sciences, with two or more years of postdoctoral training, evidence of significant peer-reviewed research accomplishments, and demonstrated experience in the instruction of professional and/or graduate students. The successful applicant must have the ability to use independent judgment, exhibit attention to detail, think critically, and demonstrate initiative.
