Overview The Research Assistant will be responsible for the organization and maintenance of large collections of specimens (Biobank) obtained from the Joslin Kidney Study (JKS) as well as the NIH repository and clinical trials. This person will focus on the implementation and analysis of individual research projects that will include measuring biomarkers using ELISA assays and proteomic platforms. Additionally, this person will also be responsible for preparing electronic datasets, maintaining specimen inventory, purchasing lab services and goods, laboratory organization, aliquoting samples, and reviewing medical records of selected patients participating in the Joslin Kidney Study. We require that all staff be vaccinated against influenza (flu) and COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Responsibilities Running ELISA assays on human blood and urine samples. This includes developing a protocol specific to each assay and analyzing the data. Organizing and maintaining an electronic database for all data produced from specified assays. Reviewing medical records of specific patients belonging to the Joslin Kidney Study. Proper labeling, handling, and storage of serum, plasma, DNA, and RNA samples. Maintaining an accurate and updated physical and electronic inventory of all samples. Responsible for the retrieval and aliquoting of serum and plasma for various projects. This includes developing a plan of how to most effectively aliquot and organize samples, as well as maintaining an accurate electronic inventory. Coordinate with outside laboratories and companies. This includes the preparation of samples according to a company's specifications as well as the logistics and tasks needed to safely ship samples. Assess the quality of the data, and identify any possible errors and correct them. Excellent communication with all members of the lab (PI, research fellows, supporting staff), to coordinate work projects and ensure proper protocols are followed. Purchase necessary goods for assays and lab procedures in addition to services like sample analysis and shipping. This entails keeping a detailed record of all purchases made. Mitigate any problems that may arise within the laboratory, including the maintenance and preservation of laboratory equipment and biohazardous materials by ensuring their proper use, handling, and disposal if needed. Work independently to complete multiple projects for deadlines, addressing several key facets such as shipping, paperwork, communications with the receiving company, and sample preparation. Report progress of projects and other tasks during weekly project meetings. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field Minimum 6 months of demonstrated laboratory experience from academic coursework or industry. Ability to focus on detailed implementation of lab protocols. Demonstrated organizational skills Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate at a basic level within various web-based applications. Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments and equipment - in a laboratory setting. Experience preparing datasets. Experience using SAS, R, or other statistical software is preferred but not required. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. Ability to follow general instructions and procedures, as provided. Strong organizational and communication skills (communicate clearly and effectively via verbal and written instruction). Ability to prioritize responsibilities - through completion. Ability to work independently and with others in the lab - to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts. Interest in medicine and or medical applications of research.
