This role focuses on the design, implementation, and validation of advanced protection and control schemes for substations connected to renewable sources, leveraging cutting-edge technology and comprehensive engineering principles.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement relay protection systems specifically for substations in renewable energy settings, ensuring system stability and safety.
  • Perform detailed fault studies using Aspen software, use results for settings calculations, and validate relay setting files using SEL Accelerator.
  • Develop and update engineering documentation and standards pertinent to renewable energy integrations and protection systems.
  • Provide technical commentary and/or approval to vendor-provided protection and control drawings and assist in off-site and on-site acceptance testing of the system.
  • Conduct sophisticated modeling and simulation tasks to optimize protection settings and perform associated coordination studies, loadability studies, arc flash studies, and system modeling studies using software tools such as ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD, and ArcPro.
  • Verify that design drawings meet IEEE and NERC compliance requirements and perform equipment validation on new and emerging relay protection.
  • Develop and present detailed reports and presentations to stakeholders, demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed solutions and their impact on system reliability and efficiency.
  • Serve as a key member on process improvement teams, driving critical projects or complex field engineering assignments to successful completion.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development within the team.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, with a strong focus on power systems and relay protection; Master's Degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in relay engineering and protection systems, particularly in settings involving renewable energy sources.
  • Experience working with Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL) relays and understanding of protection schemes and the correct application of relays.
  • Proficiency in specialized software for electrical design and simulation, such as Aspen, ETAP, AutoCAD, PSSE, PSCAD, and ArcPro.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced data analysis and model complex engineering activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of leading discussions and making impactful presentations to stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional teams, driving collaboration and innovation.
  • This position offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of integrating renewable technologies with traditional power system infrastructure, contributing significantly to the future of sustainable energy solutions.
