General Description of Duties NOTE TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS: INTERNAL CANDIDATES IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION AND/OR PAYGRADE AS THE POSITION POSTED WILL NOT RECEIVE A PAY ADJUSTMENT IF SELECTED. The purpose of the position is to supervise and provide general and specialized nursing care to inmate patients in the Correctional Facility. Employees in this classification function in an entry supervisory capacity in the implementation and management of medical care. Position ensures administration of prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques to promote the physical and mental health of the inmate population. Ensures functions under charge are performed in compliance with all safety and health federal, state and local rules, policies and other regulatory standards applicable to the work. Essential Job Functions The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Coordinates and supervise assigned medical operations in support of health care goals and objectives; coordinates activities with other departments and agencies as needed. Schedules, supervises and evaluates staff; ensures adequate coverage of all shifts; completes payroll/time sheets. Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed; maintains harmony among workers and resolves problems; initiates corrective measures for errors and complaints. Supervises and performs nursing services, such as obtaining vital signs, wound care, IV therapy, collecting blood, urine, sputum and stool specimens, respond to emergencies in the Facility, and performing assessments to insure needs are met in accordance with clinical guidelines, as well as duties imposed by the State and Federal laws and regulations and OCCD administrative procedures. Supervises and provides first aid for injuries and acute illness; reports any health-related issues and/or concerns; initiates prompt referral to the appropriate medical facility when more extensive treatment is warranted. Order medications and supplies from the pharmacy and suppliers. Actively participates in Pharmacy, Quality Assurance, Infection Control and Medical Activities Committee (MAC) meetings. Investigates any healthcare grievance filed by an inmate and prepares a written response to the Health Care Administrator. Promotes a healthcare environment that is adequate and safe for inmates-patients and the healthcare personnel. Ensures clinical area is maintained in a clean, neat and safe manner, and required counts and cleaning is performed. Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position. Minimum Qualifications Education: Associates Degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university. Experience: Must have at least two (2) years of professional experience as a Registered Nurse. Supervisory experience preferred. Certifications/Licenses: Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida. Must possess and maintain hands on, in-person (classroom) CPR Certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). Online only or eLearning CPR Certification will not be considered. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of all applicable medical treatments and common medications administered within a corrections facility. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work. Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files. Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines. Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion. Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, health and corrections professionals. Ability to deal tactfully and cordially with a variety of people from different cultural backgrounds; ability to deal with people in a variety of changing and complex situations. Ability to work under stressful conditions. Ability to sit, stand, walk, or climb stairs for extended periods of time. PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: Physical Demand: Medium 50 pounds maximum lifting. Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 10 lbs. If less lifting involved will require significant walking/standing may be required. If mostly sitting is involved will require push/pull on arm or leg controls. Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear. Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others. Physical agility is required in kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching. Required to have clear vision at distances of 20 inches or less.
