About the Role:

Job Summary

Accountable for the overall supervision of Laurelwood Nursing Services Staff on a designated shift including the effective and efficient allocation, utilization, and management of the financial, human, and material resources. Demonstrates expertise in clinical assessment and technical skills procedures. Makes general hospital administrative decisions within the framework of established policies and procedures.



Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia. National Certification in either a clinical or leadership specialty within two (2) years of hire.

  • Educational Requirements: Bachelors or Masters Degree in Nursing.

  • Minimum Experience: Minimum of five (5) years experience in practice of professional Nursing.

  • Other: Professional organization membership within three (3) months of hire into role.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and evaluates the delivery of nursing care in all Laurelwood nursing departments on assigned shift to ensure compliance with nursing standards by making on-site rounds to the clinical area.

  • Guides and collaborates with nursing personnel to ensure that the nursing process is utilized in the delivery of nursing care.

  • Promptly answers spectra phone to ensure ready availability to staff, patient, and families for assessments and assistance with problem

  • Ensures provision of a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by evaluating the compliance of designated departments in maintaining equipment supplies and physical facilities. Reports variances to appropriate manager. Reports sentinel events within appropriate timeframes.

  • Serves as a clinical and theoretical resource for the nursing staff; assisting the nursing staff with difficult or unusual procedures

  • Ensures that nursing staff respond appropriately to emergency situations according to established policies and procedures by completing a critique of all emergency responses when they occur on their designated shift.

  • Guides and advises staff in prioritizing nursing interventions in complex and rapidly changing patient situations

  • Initiates, directs, and participates in planned change to improve patient care and/or operations, and customer service.

  • Ensures that medicines are given to nurses in a safe and timely manner.

  • Ensures that equipment and supplies are delivered in a prompt manner and necessary paperwork is completed.

  • Utilizes the patient classification data, unit core staffing, and current status of each area to allocate safe and cost-effective staffing for the oncoming shift.

  • Consistently documents changes in staffing.

  • Adjusts staffing schedule on an ongoing basis to reflect necessary changes due to unscheduled absences.

  • Monitors assignment for employees who have been "pulled" to ensure fairness and appropriateness of assignment.

  • Counsels and disciplines staff to ensure quality of work and adherence to policies and procedures. Documents any intervention on appropriate forms and communicates with supervisor/manager.

  • Consistently communicates with Charge Nurses on designated shift regarding patient status and area workload.

  • Provides for orientation of personnel on designated shifts including: providing weekly verbal or written status reports of progress of oriented to Supervisor/Manager, completing performance evaluations, assisting with the completion of orientation skills checklists, and evaluating the technical skills of staff annually.

  • Constantly keeps Laurelwood nursing administration informed of changes or activities affecting Laurelwood Nursing Services on the assigned shift.

  • Serves as a resource for the proper interpretation of policies and procedures of Laurelwood, the Nursing Division and Medical Center and ensures compliance on designated shift.

  • Responds quickly and assumes leadership in acute or unusual situations, according to established Medical Center and/or departmental protocols.

  • Maintains effective working relationships and takes appropriate action when necessary to resolve problems between nursing staff, medical staff, and/or other hospital departments.

  • Activates Emergency Management plan and coordinates resources.

  • Serves as resource/liaison for patient, families, and visitors complaints and concerns.

  • Identifies and assists in meeting learning needs of staff on designated shift by: impromptu instruction and demonstration of techniques and procedures and participating in the planning or presentation of one scheduled workshop or skills day.

  • Review nursing literature and keeps current of new trends and advances in nursing/management.

  • Participates in hospital community activities to promote the image of the Nursing Division.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
