JOB SUMMARY Provides direct and indirect patient care in the Perioperative, post anesthesia care and endoscopy settings. Participates as primary nurse, team member or charge nurse in the planning, implementing and evaluation of patient care. Immediately supervised by RN Charge Nurse. Reports to OR Director. Non-Exempt Position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs RN duties within the Registered Nurse scope of practice. Performs preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative assessment/care. Monitors hemodynamic status of patient and interprets data. Assists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers. Ensures implants are documented correctly and in collaboration with the surgical team on the sterile field. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of change. Notes and enters documentation, as required. Ensures adequate stock of supplies are maintained and at PAR level. This includes checking for out dates as scheduled and rotation of stock. Checks in supplies from Materials Management and puts stock away. Ensures that all equipment is properly functioning and in working order for use. Notifies appropriate departments of any equipment not in proper working order and completes work orders. Assists with all OR and Endoscopy cases/procedures. Recovers patients after operations, procedures, treatments, etc. Takes after-hours and weekend call for emergency surgeries and/or procedures. During pre-op process, ensures all appropriate paperwork is completed and documentation is attached. Communicates with physicians/supervisor/charge nurse/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptoms. Responsible for reassessments in all aspects of patient care. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Interprets data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Gives and receives comprehensive report on assigned patients and delivers prompt, accurate, and safe nursing care. Ensures all labs, x-rays, and other reports are reviewed and called to physician as necessary. Addresses patient and family concerns and directs concerns to Charge nurse as needed. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, including family in teaching, as appropriate. Keeps up with orders and notes orders timely and accurately. Ensures patient charges are documented and correctly entered. Handles and administers medications according to policy and procedure. Anticipates the surgical team has adequate supplies needed and equipment available and in working condition. Follows proper procedure to report any damaged product/equipment/instrumentation. Maintains a safe and quiet environment for the patients and clinical staff. Initiates nurse-physician communication as appropriate to include updating the surgeon's preference cards. Provides instructions to patients, family members, significant others as appropriate. Communicates information about the surgical progress to the patient's family/significant other, as directed. Assists anesthesia personnel with induction/extubating and patient transfer to PACU. Is responsible for expediting turnovers between cases with team-members. Serves as a resource person for updating or improving patient care practices within the setting and as a preceptor when the need arises. Documents the specifics of performance during codes as well as post action follow ups and conveys this information to the OR supervisor/Charge Nurse. Documents in the electronic medical record in a clear, concise and accurate manner all information related to the patient's procedure based on the established plan of care. Participates in all time-out procedures prior to the beginning of procedures to ensure the correct site is performed. Monitors patients undergoing sedation to ensure vital signs remain stable and reports any abnormal activity to physician. Collaboratively works alongside the surgical teams to prepare the rooms in a timely manner for all procedures. Ensures that all specimens are handled appropriately and in accordance with hospital policy. Assists in positioning to ensure proper positioning to protect the patient from injury, prepping and draping of all patients for surgical/endoscopy procedures. Protects the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, mechanical and thermal sources and extraneous objects. Completes operating room counts accurately to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items. Ensures that the surgical field is maintained throughout the entire case. Assists with cleaning/processing/sterilization of instruments. Assists with daily case picking/pulling, restocking post cases, and organization of equipment for storage. Performs other duties as assigned. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure required. Current BLS for healthcare providers' certification required. Current ACLS and PALS certification required within 6 months of hire. Required Skills Must possess superior ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service. Must possess high degree of organization and be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively. Advanced computer knowledge required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook. FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS Functional Job Requirements: Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary. Lifting Requirements Job requires heavy lifting on an occasional basis.
