Job Summary

The Staff Nurse is responsible for observing and managing acute changes in condition while providing a safe home-like environment within the scope of practice of a Registered Nurse.
Primary Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and which are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Carries out administrative and patient care duties as directed.
  • Abides by department policies and procedures and interprets them to personnel, patients, medical staff and public.
  • Gives and receives reports.
  • Answers telephone inquiries.
  • Takes and transcribes physicians' orders.
  • Assists supervisor with instruction and supervision of other nursing personnel, including LPN's and nursing assistants.
  • Assess patients' needs, condition and care, and assists supervisor in developing nursing care plan for individual patients, including rehabilitative and restorative activities, and instruction in self-help.
  • Admits and orients new patients and relatives. Checks identification. Checks physicians' orders, transfer and admission information. Reviews patients' medical and social history. Requisitions and arranges for diagnostic and therapeutic services as ordered by patients' physicians. Orders prescribed medications, requisitions supplies and equipment. Sends diet order to dietary department. Assembles patients' charts, checks to see that all permits, authorizations and releases and other required forms are attached.
  • Transcribes physicians' orders.
  • Periodically reviews patient care plans with supervisor and patients' physician.
  • Provides professional nursing service for patients, following established policies and procedures.
  • Assists Nursing Supervisor in management of the unit and supervision of personnel.
  • Maintains unit records. Performs charting duties. Maintains narcotic records. Completes required unit or medical chart forms.
  • Schedules appointments and arranges for transportation of patients to other departments or facilities and clinics for diagnostic, therapeutic, dental or medical services.
  • Discharges or transfers patients. If patient is to be transferred to another institution or facility, arranges for this transfer and completes required forms.
  • Participates in in-service education programs.
  • Serves on facility committees.
  • Performs and/or supervises and assists with patient care according to outlined policy and procedures, such as a.m. and p.m. care and ward duties.
  • Checks patient's chart for specific treatment and medication orders. Checks patient's daily schedule. Carries out or assigns duties to other personnel.
  • Makes rounds. Takes and records vital signs as required. Checks and gives medications, gives treatments, and performs other professional services as ordered or required.
  • Gives emergency treatment when required, and notifies physician of emergency and takes and carries out physician's orders.
  • Accompanies physician on rounds and assists with examination and treatments. Reviews patient care plan with physician. Notifies physician of automatic stop orders on specific medications. Assess and notifies physician of changes in patient's condition, and any unusual or abnormal observations.
  • Carries out restorative and rehabilitative program for patients. Instructs patients in self-help, self-care. Instructs relatives in home care and rehabilitation. Carries out pre-discharge program for patients.
  • Attempts to fulfill spiritual and psychological needs of patients.
  • Facilitates the resident's annual review.
  • Attends team conferences and staff meetings.
  • Periodically attends continuing education workshops including maintaining current certificates in CPR.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level/type, as required.
Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) year previous health or nursing experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Current licensure in the State of WI as a Registered Nurse.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to travel between work locations.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM LANGUAGE SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS
In order to perform the duties of the position (listed above) the following language skills are essential for the Staff Nurse to possess.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with other staff members, supervisors, and community members in written and verbal form.
  • English skills (oral, written and comprehension) sufficient to effectively communicate with all internal and external customers.
MINIMUM REASONING ABILITY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to understand and apply governmental accounting practices in maintenance of financial records.
