Job specification

  • The Operating Room(OR) RN must make sure that the operating room is properly cleaned, stocked, and equipped with all necessary instruments and supplies before each surgery. They will also make sure that the surgical team follows proper infection control protocols.
  • During surgery, the RN is responsible for assisting the surgeon as needed. This may involve handing them instruments, monitoring the patient's vital signs, and providing any necessary medications.
  • The RN is responsible for monitoring the patient's vital signs and ensuring that they are stable throughout the surgery. They may also administer medication or fluids as needed.
  • The RN will be responsible for managing various equipment used in the OR, including anesthesia machines, surgical tools, and monitoring devices.
  • The RN will document all aspects of the surgical procedure, including the patient's vital signs, medications administered, and any complications that arise.
  • The RN will be responsible for communicating with the surgical team throughout the procedure to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that the patient is receiving appropriate care.
  • The RN will prepare the patient for surgery by providing preoperative education and ensuring that the patient understands the procedure and what to expect.
  • After surgery, the RN will monitor the patient's recovery and provide post-operative care instructions, such as wound care, medication management, and follow-up appointment

Candidate requirements

  • Must have a nursing degree from an accredited institution. This can include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with additional certification in preoperative nursing.
  • Must hold a current, unrestricted license to practice nursing. This requires passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and meeting other state-specific requirements.
  • While certification is not always required, many OR RNs choose to pursue certification in preoperative nursing through organizations such as the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) or the Association of preoperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
  • Requires prior experience in preoperative nursing(minimum of 2 years), either through a formal preoperative nursing program or through on-the-job training.
  • Must have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills. They must also be able to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures. They must also have a solid knowledge of infection control practices, sterile techniques, and medical terminology.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and lift able to lift equipment and patients.
