A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position drives, facilitates and enables operational excellence through the implementation of Lean principles and practices across Valmont Irrigation and Tubing sites to achieve customer focus, simplicity, agility and accountability. The Regional Lean Manager identifies, communicates and overcomes obstacles that may affect Valley performance and assists teams in resolving conflicts to order achieve optimal improvement. The focus is to train and coach managers, supervisors and staff in the application of Lean tools and processes including 5S, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) cell design, standardization of work, KanBan, (SMED) Single Minute Exchange of Die, The Valmont Way principles as well as other systems, tools and metrics used to drive customer focus (VOC) Voice of the Customer, continuous improvement, and bottom-line results for the North American Irrigation/Tubing business. The incumbent's primary focus is on generating and executing Valley North America's production savings and driving high-impact improvements and Lean methodology mentoring activities. The goal is to support the overall productivity goal and objectives for the Valley businesses including the manufacturing facilities in Valley, Waverly and McCook, Nebraska

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate and coach Lean events, coordinate Lean activities, including acting as a liaison between teams, support groups, management, and other functional areas, removing obstacles that may affect Valley's global performance
  • Lead Irrigation/Tubing teams in development and improvement of business processes, architecture, requirements, change management and metrics
  • Promote and facilitate diagnosis of work flow impediments and other waste throughout the Division and provide counsel on appropriate tools to eliminate them
  • Guide site managers, general managers, plant managers, lean technician and site staff on Lean philosophies and Lean leadership
  • Define and facilitate improvement activities based on 'Plan-Do-Check-Act/Adjust' (PDCA) methodology and in accordance with the site Lean Roadmap
  • Drive improvement in, and quality of, relevant discipline standards and practices to continually increase the value to the customer
  • Calculate and maintain Lean-related measures, maintain records, maintain visual boards, and communicate data to relevant personnel
  • Responsible for determining resource requirements, training needs, and internal control procedures that address relevant objectives within Regional facilities
  • Make recommendations on controls, monitor their application with processes, and meet with senior management to report on the operation of internal control
  • The ability to work independently and in a team environment, building relationships with all levels of employees
  • A customer-focused, result and change leader for Valley that can move the change process forward
  • Mentor, coach teams to find a way forward in ambiguous situations
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple, simultaneous priorities and meet aggressive deadlines
  • This positions reports to the Director of Operations and does not have any direct or indirect reports
  • This position will require up to 30% domestic travel, including overnight stays

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Assist the Director of Operations in the development of the Regional Lean Roadmap as the philosophy to support business goals, while tying them to the Lean implementation strategy
  • Dissemination of Lean information through all levels of site staff
  • Help identify employee training needs

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Preferred Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of relevant experience or Associates degree with 8+ years of relevant experience or 10+ year of relevant experience
  • A strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, including Visio
  • Expert in Lean Manufacturing and experience in program management including knowledge of Best Practices in strategy deployment, project execution, and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing others while facilitating and delivering results to a business
  • A solid understanding of Lean principles and methodology
  • The ability to perform math calculations required by Lean methodology including basic algebra
  • Effective facilitation skill set for interaction with all levels of the organization
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • A broad knowledge of the material, costs, techniques, and processes used within the manufacturing industry
  • The ability to travel domestically for up to 30% of the year

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • A professional Lean Certification and commitment to continuous Lean learning
  • Facilitation/coaching experience at TPM events, Standard Work events, SMED events, RCAs, manufacturing, and administrative value stream improvement projects
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting; however, the incumbent is required to walk out into the production or shipping/receiving areas several times during the scheduled shift. Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times in the shop area. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk on the phone and participate in meetings. The environment can be fast-paced and demanding at times with overtime required during certain seasons of the year. Domestic travel up to 30%, including overnight stays. Due to the sensitive nature of some material, the Regional Lean Manager is to work discreetly, maintaining appropriate confidentiality and limiting the sharing of information to those who need to know.
