OVERVIEW After 15 years of building efficiency work in California, Ecology Action saw multi-site enterprise business holdings as the greatest opportunity for realizing emission reductions at scale. The need to expand this important work beyond California gave rise to Taper, a B-Corp subsidiary of Ecology Action, specializing in scalable building efficiency for companies with numerous built assets. Taper operates as a consulting partner and general contractor, providing the full spectrum of consulting, sourcing, and construction services to help businesses realize massive greenhouse gas reductions and operational savings through building efficiency. POSITION SUMMARY Taper has an opening for a Refrigeration Construction Project Manager. This position manages installation projects for all types of supermarket and cold storage refrigeration systems, to include parallel rack, protocol, single systems, RTU, self-contained cases, and systems with all gases including CO2 and Glycol. This position provides construction project management for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, VFD retrofits and other HVAC energy saving controls, as well as heat pump water heating systems (HPWH). This position will be the thought leader for HVAC-R and HPWH and work collaboratively with others within the organization to build out a world class refrigeration and HVAC offering to assist the industry in reducing energy usage and carbon emissions. RESPONSIBILITIES Project planning, design, bid creation, bid review, value engineering, installation management, equipment selection, subcontractor selection, system assessment, QA/QC of installations, and reporting out on departmental goals and objectives Work cross functionally to support and guide the sales, customer success, and innovation functions within the organization in the areas of HVAC-R and HPWH Planning tasks and milestones for refrigeration contractors, electrical contractors, plumbing contractors, and equipment manufacturers Overseeing subcontractors who are doing pipe installations, case change outs, and gas change outs to ensure that contractors are adhering to all scope, safety, and installation requirements Comprehensive review of installations, including piping, mechanical room installations, electrical, energy management system (EMS) integrations/installations, and creating punch lists for all remaining concerns EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE HVAC or Refrigeration Trade school completion; or its equivalent and demonstrated competency in Refrigeration Construction Management One of the following combinations of experience: At least eight (8) years of experience working in supermarket refrigeration construction with at least 2 CO2 and/or Glycol installations, or, At least five (5) years of experience in supermarket refrigeration construction AND at least three (3) years of experience assigned to a major grocer as a Refrigeration Technician KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Understanding of the complexities of reducing refrigeration loads as a result of adding doors to medium temp cases, how that reduced load may impact existing systems, and how to mitigate that impact. Knowledge of Emerson/E2/Danfoss/Prodigy Controller Programming Systems Knowledge of Project Management software programs Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite Knowledge of construction trade terminologies/safety and OSHA regulations Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents Knowledge of project management methodologies Extensive knowledge of grocery refrigeration and HVAC equipment Ability to direct consultants and communicate standards accurately Proficient in the latest refrigeration technology and emerging trends in refrigerants Must be able to interpret complex stores HVAC-R systems and explain them in simple terms Strong leadership and negotiation skills Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written Valid driver's license and automobile insurance DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Construction, Business, or an analytical discipline Ten (10) or more years of experience working in supermarket refrigeration construction with at least 2 CO2 and/or Glycol installations Performance measurement skills Expert knowledge of Emerson/E2/Danfoss/Prodigy Controller Programming Systems OSHA 30 certification EPA Universal license WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
