Location: Stockton, CA Position Type: Full-Time Term: 18+ months Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Recreation Therapist to provide specialized therapeutic services to patient-inmates and DJJ youth in a corrections facility in Stockton, CA. The role involves developing and implementing recreation therapy programs designed to promote social interaction, encourage beneficial leisure activities, and prepare individuals for reentry into the general population or other levels of treatment. Key Responsibilities:
  • Therapeutic Program Development: Create and implement specialized recreation therapy services that promote social interaction and appropriate use of leisure time for patient-inmates and DJJ youth.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Participate in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) and coordinate services with primary clinicians, correctional counselors, and other custody personnel.
  • Needs Evaluation: Assess the recreation therapy needs of patient-inmates and DJJ youth, focusing on activities of daily living, communication skills, physical exercise, and positive coping strategies.
Qualifications:
  1. Experience: Minimum of 12 continuous months of relevant experience within the last 3 years in a public or private institution (excluding internships).
  2. Licensure/Certification: Must hold required licenses, permits, and certifications.
  3. Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation. Must include supervised fieldwork approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or the California Board of Recreation and Park Certification (CBRPC).
  4. Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in English and able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
Additional Requirements:
  • Orientation: Must be available for a minimum one-week orientation.
  • Commitment: Positions are full-time with set schedules, typically Monday-Friday, though some flexibility exists. Candidates must work at least 30 hours per week.
  • Onboarding: Candidates should be prepared for an extensive onboarding process.
