Job Purpose

This Materials Analysis Engineer is responsible to provide Materials & Failure analyses, which are necessary to identify quality concerns in Powersports (PSP) Manufacturing, so that Honda can make key business decisions regarding PSP mass production quality (i.e., acceptance/rejection of supplied parts, defect resolution, deciding countermeasures, authorizing changepoints, evaluation of new products, etc.)


Key Accountabilities

  • Failure analysis and technical investigation support regarding raw materials, testing of parts, performance or manufacturability problems, and other productions-related items.
  • Interpreting materials and property criteria & methods from blueprints/drawings, published standards and Honda Engineering Standards.
  • Problem assessment and determination of appropriate test/inspection plans.
  • Analysis and testing of parts and materials such as hardness testing, microscopy, spectrometry, metallographic inspections, X-Ray inspection, thermal analysis, etc.
  • Sample preparation using instruments such as saws, metallographic preparation devices, etchants, etc.
  • Provide effective communications of technical findings to requestors (verbal and technical reports).
  • Interact with other departments, and occasionally suppliers, to provide support services.
  • Laboratory equipment management, and some user-level maintenance.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • 2 or 4 -year Degree from college or university in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Technology, or Polymer Engineering
  • 1 year of prior Materials related experience (academic, professional, apprentice, etc.)
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and/or polymer principles.
  • Understanding of material properties and their relationship to function/performance.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing methods (welding, casting, forging, heat treatment, injection molding, etc.).
  • Operational skill in all Materials Lab instruments.
  • Testing and technical/report writing experience (may be academic or professional).

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work flexible schedule including shifts and weekends as necessary.
  • Must be willing to travel as required.
  • Must be able to work overtime as necessary to support department needs (short term and/or scheduled).
  • Working in a laboratory on-site majority of the time. Warehouse/production floor presence may be required 10% of the time.
