Under general supervision, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs routine maintenance work on City streets and buildings, and performs related duties as required.

Supervision is provided by the Deputy Director of Public Works or their designee
Essential Job Functions

Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Performs general street cleaning; picks up rubbish and debris; empties refuse containers and loads rubbish and debris on trucks; sweeps and washes cement walks, driveways, and sidewalks; performs routine graffiti abatement on City streets and buildings; uses a variety of equipment including paint rollers and pressure washer; and cleans and maintains tools and equipment. Maintains regular attendance.

Qualification Guidelines

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:

Education and/or Experience:
Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Knowledge of:
Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance work, and safe work practices.

Ability to:
Use hand and light power tools required in maintenance work; perform heavy manual labor; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Licenses and Certificates

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to lift up to 75 pounds or more with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Employee generally works outdoors. Employee may travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date. Applications will be screened for qualifications, appropriate background, and only the most qualified will be invited to participate in the oral examination process. Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score. Applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the interview date, time, and location. The examination process will include:

Oral Interview weighted at 100%

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.

The City does not participate in the Social Security System. Part-time employees will be enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) and contribute 3.75% of their wages each pay period. The city will also contribute the equivalent of 3.75% to the employees PARS account. This position may receive 24 hours of sick time per year. The current vacancy offers varied work schedule and may require daytime, evenings and weekend hours.
