Public Health Microbiologists are responsible for performing bacteriological, parasitological, serological, and virological examinations on human, animal, food, and water specimen. The incumbents will prepare specimens for analysis, make slide examinations, and perform cultural procedures which result in the identification of pathogenic bacteria such as tuberculosis or enteric organisms. The incumbents will also analyze food, milk, and water samples for pathogenic bacteria and toxic agents and perform serological tests on blood serum as an aide in the diagnosis of various diseases. What you will typically be responsible for: Preparing specimen for analysis Making slide examinations and performing cultural procedures which result in the identification of pathogenic bacteria such as tuberculosis or enteric organisms Analyzing food, milk and water samples for pathogenic bacteria and toxic agents Performing serological tests on blood serum as an aid in diagnosis of such diseases as syphilis and other disease which result in an elevated blood titer Performing tests on brain material for the identification of rabies virus Performing various molecular techniques for the detection of viruses and bacteria To read the complete job description, please visit the website The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months.License Required: Possession of a valid certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California State Department of Health. Other Requirements: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment. Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process. 2. Training and Experience Evaluation: At the time of filing, within the supplemental questionnaire, candidates will be required to complete a training and experience questionnaire. Candidates that clearly meet the minimum qualifications, as described above, will have their training and experience responses evaluated. The training and experience questionnaire is designed to measure candidate's relevant education, training, and/or experience as it relates to the Public Health Microbiologist classification.
