Summary:

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized Tribe with its ancestral homeland located in Niobrara, NE. The Tribe does not have a reservation in the classic definition; rather, the Ponca Restoration Act defined its jurisdiction as a 'Service Delivery Area' comprised of 15 counties throughout parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Within its Service Delivery Area, the Tribe offers a broad range of health, social, educational, and cultural services.


Under the general direction of the Medical Director and Chief Behavioral Health Officer, the Psychiatrist will provide psychiatric care for adults and children/adolescents. Additionally, they will provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) for patients with opioid use disorders. The Psychiatrist must meet Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Standards and The Joint Commission Standards regarding diagnosing and treating major mental illness within the scope of practice.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Serves as the attending psychiatrist for assigned behavioral health adults and youth.
    • Elicits and records information about patient's medical and psychological history.
    • Examines patient to determine general physical condition.
    • Orders or executes various tests, analyses, and diagnostic assessments to provide information on patient's condition.
    • Analyzes reports and findings of tests and of examination, and diagnoses condition.
    • Administers or prescribes treatments and drugs.
    • Refers patients to medical specialist or other practitioner for specialized medical treatment.
  2. Reviews Comprehensive Treatment Plan to indicate modifications and progress at least monthly.
  3. Timely evaluation and documentation of the patient's current medication regime and progress.
  4. Provide supervision for conditionally licensed prescribing psychologist as needed.
  5. Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.
  6. Abides by all clinic policies, medical staff bylaws, and rules and regulations.
  7. Act in accordance with good citizenship and professional standards, while contributing to the mission of Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
  8. Complete other duties as assigned.
  9. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
    • Ability to demonstrate experience in applying knowledge of behavioral health systems
    • Ability to apply excellent communication skills to give clear instructions and delegate authority and interpersonal skills necessary to negotiate and mediate in stressful situations
    • Ability to provide diagnosis and treatment of mental illness to provide quality patient care
    • Ability to communicate concisely, and work well with professional, support staff, and patients
    • Ability to apply knowledge of policies and procedures and ability to make accurate interpretation of the same
  10. Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Relationships and Authority:

This position has no supervisory duties.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

This position is in professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, scanners, and photocopiers.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

  1. D. or D.O. degree required, from an accredited school
  2. Must be board certified, or board eligible, in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and/or Adult Psychiatry, and must possess or be eligible for licensure in the State of Nebraska
  3. Must possess a DATA 2000
  4. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  6. Valid driver's license and be insurable.
  7. Successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  8. Able and willing to travel.

Preferred:

  1. Two or more years' experience in providing individual, family and group counseling.
  2. One year experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Public Law 93-638" Indian Self-Determination Act.
