Job Description
The Prototype Shop Technician supports fast paced iterative development of surgical instruments and implants by processing metal 3D prints, including machine preparation, and finishing prototype mechanisms and parts in collaboration with engineers and other machinists. The Prototype Shop Technician, sets up, operates, and maintains DMLS metal printers, and will use hand tools as well as manual toolroom equipment. This position reports to the Prototype Shop Supervisor.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manufactures, and finishes prototypes supporting product development.
Fabricates, and builds prototype mechanisms for surgical instruments and implant evaluation.
Prepares and post processes DMLS 3D printed parts.
Uses hand tools and shop equipment including belt sanders, bandsaw, grinders, etc.
Ensures prototypes are made to achieve design intent and to specification.
Performs dimensional and visual inspections to ensure prototypes are built to specification and are functional.
Collaborates with engineers to manufacture prototypes for testing and evaluation.
Maintains quality and safety standards.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to use hand tools,
Knowledge of machine shop safety
Knowledge of routine preventative maintenance of 3D metal printing equipment
Knowledge of hand finishing tools, media blasters, tumlbers, etc.
Working knowledge of general office software including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Communicates well with Prototype Shop Supervisor and R&D Engineers verbally and written.
