Job Description Summary

You will serve as a Production Machinery Mechanic Leader (Expert) in the DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY.

You will serve as an Expert Production Machinery Mechanic leading a group to ensure assignments are carried. This position is located in Shop 06.

Applicants will only be considered for positions within their own UIC. For example: If you are within UIC 4523A, you will only be considered for positions within 4523A.

Current permanent employees of Norfolk NSY (UIC 42158), PHNSY & IMF (UIC 32253), Portsmouth NSY (UIC 39040), PSNS (UIC 4523A), DoD Military Spouse Preference (MSP) eligibles, DoD Military Reserve (MR) and National Guard (NG) Technician Preference eligibles, DoD Retained Grade Preference eligibles, and VEOA eligibles.

Duties
•  You will setup, operate, and troubleshoot the various types of equipment and machinery.
•  You will independently troubleshoot complex repairs and maintenance of machines and machine installations.
•  You will determine corrective actions of repairs and modifications needed to complete assignments.
•  You will work in accordance with developed technical direction including blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out work of various machinery and equipment.
•  You will make decisions and solves problems that arise during the execution of work, understand and know when to obtain needed information or decisions from supervisors on higher level problems.
•  You will make recommendations to management on mechanics who need additional training for skills refresher, when severe deficiencies in skills and abilities are identified.
•  You will identify cumbersome work practices, target improvement actions and develop efficient processes or best practices.

•  You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination and undergo recurring physical examinations.
•  You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
•  You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
•  Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
•  This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
•  This position may require work onboard ships, the ability to climb vertical ladders and work in awkward positions and confined spaces
•  This position may require rotating shift work.
•  This position requires the ability to lift and carry items up to 40 pounds in weight.
•  This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Salary is based on geographical location and is subject to change with the annual local wage surveys in accordance with the provisions of 5 CFR Part 532 for all employees whose official duty station is located within the geographic boundary of the wage area definition.
