Job description: Production Engineer - Food grade chemicals The Production Engineer (mid-career level) uses a deep understanding of the unit operating procedures and processes to provide analysis, give instruction, plan, compile information, and work collaboratively with others to meet daily production plans. The Production Engineer draws upon significant knowledge of the unit processes and equipment to make business-based decisions. Has responsibility for assessing the quality, robustness, and capability of the process and making decisions, with others, to halt or modify production as needed if the process does not meet quality and/or safety standards. The incumbent must be able to interact effectively with plant personnel at all levels to influence desired outcomes. Responsibilities: Typical duties of the job include but are not limited to:
Lead unit activities to meet Safety Health Environmental, Quality / Food Safety, Cost, and Production goals.
Provide technical support for specific manufacturing unit(s) including monitoring performance metrics, monitoring OEE data, troubleshooting, and investigating product quality problems
Manage unit Process Safety Management (PSM) aspects including Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) processes as needed.
Lead and/or participate in incident investigations using Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and/or other tools.
Provide Unit subject matter expertise/process knowledge to all functions (e.g., Maintenance, Manufacturing Technology, Quality, etc.)
Coordinate Unit maintenance activities utilizing the Work Management Process (WMP) and in collaboration with the Maintenance Coordinator and Maintenance staff.
Coordinate and communicate Unit daily activities including the issuance of the Units Daily Plan
Provide expertise in starting up and shutting down the plant for planned and unplanned circumstances.
Assist the Unit Manager in developing plans to ensure cost-effective use of assets.
Use Six Sigma or other defect elimination tools and lean tools to find solutions.
Provide coaching & counseling for FLS and Co-Ops. Mentor other professionals who support production areas through teaching and communicating to improve the organizations skills to meet business needs.
Establish effective communications systems throughout the unit focused on sharing information and engaging employees in the success of the facility.
Perform job duties in a manner that follows food safety and quality guidelines including but not limited to HACCP, GMPs, QA Policies, Sanitation, and Pest Control.
Other duties that may be required due to dynamic changes in business focus. Job requirements:
Chemical or mechanical engineering degree and 5 years or greater of experience in an industrial environment and/or process engineering role.
Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data, identify solutions, assess risk factors, and make sound business decisions.
Familiar with Process Safety Management practices including MOC and PSSR.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams and role model strong safety standards.
Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to use Microsoft applications (WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, etc.) and be able to learn other computer systems/databases.
Preferred skills and experience include:
Demonstrated knowledge of solids drying technologies, wastewater pH control, wastewater solids processing
Experience with capital project management (development through execution)
Familiar with environmental regulatory reporting.
Familiar with Work Management Process and maintenance best practices.
Familiar with Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
Demonstrated ability to use key computer-based tools including SAP, SharePoint, ETQ Reliance, Lotus Notes
Six Sigma Certification, Lean Manufacturing Methodology, and Continuous Improvement Knowledge. Qualifications: EXPERIENCE: BS Chem E or related with 5-10 years from The Food, Grain or Chemical Process Industries where unit operations are applied. Desired skill set include Centrifugation, Spray dray drying, and Six Sigma. Looking for a candidate with examples of process improvement in a plant setting. Preferred:
•  5 plus years' experience in a food manufacturing or chemical environment.
•  Chemical Engineering degree strongly preferred.
