We are seeking a computational physicist, computational scientist, or applied mathematician to fill the role of a high-performance computing computational physicist. This candidate will use and develop algorithms, codes, and analytical tools to numerically solve complex mathematical models of physical phenomena related to superconductivity while interacting with experimental colleagues to solve complex problems. The ideal candidate has knowledge of state-of-the-art scientific computing methods, experience in joint experimental-theory collaborations, and experience with models of superconductivity. Strong candidates demonstrate scientific curiosity and are excited to participate in the evolution of new technologies and can effectively communicate their own knowledge to others. This position requires work on site at our Linthicum, MD location or our Annapolis Junction, MD location. Your responsibilities: Implement algorithms and codes for large-scale simulation of mathematical models in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment. Incorporate input from the scientific computing team on code development, testing, and validation of simulation tools, as well as creation of model pipelines or workflows. Communicate iteratively and regularly with the simulation team, physicists, engineers, and organizational leadership to determine development requirements and report on progress. Develop physics-based mathematical models and/or improve upon existing models for the accurate description of superconductivity, electromagnetism, and quantum-mechanical systems. Document methods and results in technical papers and presentations; document code for users and other developers. What you need to be successful in the role: Innovative problem-solving skills. Basic Qualifications for a Principal Computational Scientist: Bachelor's degree in physics, applied mathematics, scientific computation, computer science, materials science and engineering, or a related field with 5 years of relevant experience (3 years with an M.S. or 0 years with a Ph.D.). Proficiency with physics-based simulations and simulation output visualizations including python-based tools and libraries. Knowledge of algorithms, methods, software libraries, and other tools commonly used in scientific computation. Ability to productively communicate with peers in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements. US Citizenship is a requirement of this. Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal Computational Physicist: Bachelor's degree in physics, applied mathematics, scientific computation, computer science, materials science and engineering, or a related field with 9 years of relevant experience (7 years with an M.S. or 4 years with a Ph.D.). Proficiency with physics-based simulations and simulation output visualizations including python-based tools and libraries. Knowledge of algorithms, methods, software libraries, and other tools commonly used in scientific computation. Experience and ability in leading peers in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements. US Citizenship is a requirement of this. Preferred Qualifications for both Principal and Sr. Principal Computational Scientist: Background in computational physics, scientific computation, or high-performance computing. Experience implementing numerical methods for numerically solving differential equations. Experience developing physics-based mathematical models and validating models against experimental data. Experience working in a high-performance computing environment. Experience using version control software and familiarity with version control best practices. Knowledge of multiscale modeling approaches and/or multi-physics simulations. Knowledge of superconducting physics, quantum mechanics, or condensed matter physics. Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance. Salary Range: $123,900 - $185,900 Salary Range 2: $153,600 - $230,400 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
