GIA (Gemological Institute of America) invites qualified candidates to apply for a Richard T. Liddicoat Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at its Carlsbad, California location. The position will be hybrid, requiring the Fellow to be on campus for part of the week. This one-to-two-year fellowship encourages early-career researchers to pursue full-time academic research into fundamental scientific, mathematical, and algorithmic problems in diamond design and evaluation. Applicants are not required to have previous experience with diamonds or gemstones, but an appreciation of visual aesthetics is a plus. The mathematics involved in diamond design involves vector geometry, optical physics, combinatorics, graph theory, topology, optimization, and more. Creative applications of higher mathematics to the world of diamonds are encouraged. Fellows are expected to work with the diamond-cut research team in its ongoing research program, with the potential for publication and collaboration with outside research institutions and universities. Candidates with a background in topology, geometry, or combinatorics and some experience with mathematical programming are especially encouraged to apply. The fellowship includes a competitive annual stipend ($73,000+), research funding, and approved travel subsidies. Benefits include full health, dental and vision insurance, and the potential reimbursement of relocation expenses. Appointments are for one year and may be extended for a second based on mutual agreement, with the possibility of regular employment after the second year pending budgetary considerations and other factors. The start date of each fellowship is flexible. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date, preferably within the last three years. Effective oral and written English skills and the ability to publish high-level research articles are required. Candidates should be willing to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
