Description The City of Fairfield Parks & Recreation Departmentis lookingfor experienced and motivated individuals tolead and coordinate activities within the aquatics division, including but not limited to: recreation activities, health and fitness programs, prevention programs, classes, special events, marketing functions, and citywide volunteer programs. Incumbents will work with the general public, which may include senior citizens, adults, teens, youth, and/or preschool age children. Successful candidates must be ready to contribute to the department's mission to DELIVER AWESOME in the amazing work we do in Parks & Recreation as leaders of play and builders of community. There are currently 5 vacancies for this classification. If your application is accepted, you will be invited to participate in an assessment process which will include an interview and swim test. Assessment dates and additional details regarding the assessment process will be provided if selected to proceed. Please Note: Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). WORKING CONDITIONS Work is typically at the Aquatics Complex at Allan Witt Park, but may include other facilities, and is performed both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, sun, water, noise, dust, pollens, and chemicals/cleaning agents used in an aquatics complex. There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Position requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, walk frequently, lift and/or move objects up to fifty (50) pounds; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; clear (understandable) speech, visual and hearing acuity. The ability to actively participate in recreational activities (including games), and work outdoors in both heat and cold, are also required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from a supervisor, or manager assigned to the aquatic division. Receives guidance and direction from an Aquatics Program Coordinator or a Recreation Program Coordinator. Incumbents of this class do not exercise supervision, but may provide lead direction to other part time staff or volunteers. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education equivalent to a high school diploma is required. A minimum of one (1) full season performing the duties equivalent to a Senior Lifeguard with the City of Fairfield is required (i.e., leading in completion of daily schedules, zones, scanning and rotation, monitoring behavior, and conducting opening and closing duties). A full season is defined as 240 hours (20 hours/week for 3 months) LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE: Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment is required. Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training with Administering Emergency Oxygen Certifications are required. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation is required. Ability to pass a pre-employment teaching skills evaluation is required. Possession of an ARC Water Safety Instructor Certification is required within 12 months of appointment. Possession of an ARC Lifeguard Instructor Certification is required within 12 months of appointment. Examples of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct continuous surveillance of pool area for signs of swimmers in trouble and for violations of pool and safety regulations. Monitor activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents? enforce rules, regulations, and policies. Respond quickly to emergency situations in the water or surrounding areas; perform as lead worker in emergency procedures and first aid situations as needed. Maintain a safe environment and take steps to prevent accidents by eliminating potentially hazardous conditions. Provide courteous and professional service to program participants, facility users, City staff, and the public; discuss program and participant concerns and provides solution when appropriate. Plan, organize, schedule, and evaluate assigned aquatic programs or facilities. Responsible for monitoring program and site rules, policies, and regulations. Assign, schedule, and review the work of lower level workers; ensure department standards for safety, facility, and aquatic program operations are met. Direct lower level workers in on-site communication with parents, participants, and the public; discuss program concerns and participation issues; provide solutions when appropriate. Present professional appearance (including wearing appropriate uniform or attire) at all times. Plan and conduct staff meetings and trainings for lower level workers including monthly in-service trainings, planned and random skills tests, and in-pool assessments. Attend and participate at staff meetings and trainings. Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility; maintain accurate records. Provide aquatic safety and instruction for guests. Use computer for data entry, roster printing, and registration processing. Operate copiers, fax machines, computers, and other program-specific equipment. Assist with ordering, maintaining, and taking inventory of program supplies. Prepare incident & accident reports and maintain program records. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge & Abilities Knowledge of: Procedures used in implementing and performing a variety of aquatic activities including lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and working with people of various ages and abilities in aquatic settings. Recreation and lifesaving tools and equipment. Principles of customer service. Modern office equipment, including computers. Ability to: Effectively lead, delegate, and oversee activities and assignments through instruction and leadership. Use independent judgment in problem solving routine situations. Use equipment used in the aquatics division. Work cooperatively with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public. Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements. Swim with proficiency and endurance. Perform water rescues, CPR, and First Aid. React calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Teach proper swimming techniques, safety practices, and water safety to youth, adults and staff. Communicate courteously and effectively with participants and those encountered in the workplace. Prepare required reports and forms. Follow oral and written instructions. Enforce rules, policies, and procedures diplomatically.
