Johnston County Public Schools Job Description POSITION: Plumber II (Irrigation Technician) LOCATION: Facility Services SALARY: Pay Grade 67 REPORTS TO: Plumbing Foreman TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time - 12 Months JOB GOAL: Performs a variety of tasks to help ensure the day-to-day success of the school district's plumbing and irrigation systems. KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES: Someone who is reliable, possesses a strong work ethic with self motivation, and is experienced in sports field irrigation systems and plumbing service and repair. Working knowledge of the mechanical principles of irrigation sprinkler equipment, sprinkler control devices and other irrigation components available on the market, and their functions for testing and troubleshooting. Ability to repair and maintain existing irrigation systems, including repairs or replacement of piping in the irrigation systems. Ability to use locating tools to find and repair irrigation electrical systems and components. Knowledge of backflow assemblies and ability to troubleshoot and make repairs. Knowledge of all tools required for irrigation repair, installation, and plumbing service repairs. Knowledge of well pump system components, functions, and operations. Must be able to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with all school personnel and other members of facility services. Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety hazards, and safety practices. Knowledge and use of computers, including Google applications such as Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive. Knowledge of building, fire, and life safety codes and regulations for school facilities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works under the supervision of the Plumbing Foreman and Plumbing Supervisor to install, maintain, operate, diagnose, and repair existing irrigation systems at JCPS facilities. Perform work involving the following duties: repair broken sprinkler lines, solenoid zone valves, isolation valves, controllers, relays, and related equipment. Establish and maintain sprinkler system preventive maintenance programs. Maintain recordkeeping, work orders, inventory, and ability to contact multiple vendors to order parts, equipment, and supplies. Work closely with contractors installing sprinkler systems around new structures to assure proper irrigating capabilities of the system. Prepare or revise sketches or plans to show location of pipes, shutoff valves, sprinkler heads, and control boxes. Operate heavy equipment if necessary to excavate for repairs. Perform manual excavation repairs where equipment is not feasible. Must be able to work independently or in teams as required. Must be able to work overtime, on call rotation, and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies, adverse weather conditions, and unforeseen circumstances. Position may assist with snow and ice removal or flood mitigation under the direction of a supervisor. Adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. At all times perform work in a safe manner for yourself and those around you. Maintain a safe and clean working environment with all appropriate or necessary equipment to alert anyone to open trenches, holes, or any type of safety concerns that could potentially cause injury. Ability to meet schedules and timelines. Ability to make appropriate decisions without the assistance from the immediate supervisor. Be motivated to produce a high quality work product. Ability to respond as needed to assist with emergency situations. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time. Exhibit dexterity of hands and fingers to operate and use a variety of plumbing and irrigation tools and equipment. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion. Ability to walk up and down steps in a building. Ability to carry, place, climb, and work on ladders of varying heights. Ability to regularly lift, move, carry, push, or pull up to 35 pounds of equipment/objects on a regular basis. Must be able to lift 90 pounds or more occasionally. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to work in outdoor environments, both hot and cold. ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED from regionally or nationally accredited institutions. Vocational or Technical School training preferred. Backflow assembly testing certification preferred. NC Irrigation Contractors license preferred. Multitrade experience with a concentration in plumbing. Three years experience with irrigation systems preferred. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must be able to work flexible hours as needed to perform the duties of the position.
