Summary

Layout, assemble, install, or maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, or related hydraulic or pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, or industrial production or processing systems.

Essential Functions
  1. Cuts, threads, or hammers pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders.
  2. Lays out full-scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, or related equipment, according to blueprints.
  3. Assembles or secures pipes, tubes, fittings, or related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, or threading joints.
  4. Measures and marks pipes for cutting or threading.
  5. Inspects, examines, or tests installed systems or pipe lines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  6. Plans pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
  7. Attaches pipes to walls, structures, or fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
  8. Modifies, cleans, or maintains pipe systems, units, fittings, or related machines or equipment, using hand or power tools.
  9. Selects pipe sizes, types, or related materials, such as supports, hangers, or hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
  10. Cuts or bores holes in structures, such as bulkheads, decks, walls, or mains, prior to pipe installation, using hand or power tools.
  11. Installs automatic controls to regulate pipe systems.
  12. Shuts off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.
  13. Removes and replaces worn components.
  14. Inspects work sites for obstructions or holes that could cause structural weakness.


Requirements

Required:
  1. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience
  2. Must have a high degree of precision and control in work where damage could be considerable; sustained high degree of attention and care required to prevent injury to self and others when responsible for installation and repair of high-pressure steam vessels and piping; and ability to perform heavy maintenance work which involves climbing, rigging, stooping, bending, and exposure to high-pressure steam and fluids.

Preferred:
  1. Completion of formal apprenticeship program or completion of in-company, three-year training program to satisfaction of plant training committee preferred.
