Advises and clinically supervises the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows). Actively participates in Medical Center committees and teams. Participates in various facility programs, designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams. Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center. Annually develop and evaluate professional and personal goals. Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self directed learning Activities. Clinical: Provides quality patient-centered patient care to outpatients for adults age 1865 and older adults age 65+. Maintains clinical privileges in Primary Care, in order to fulfill the duties of his/her assignment. Demonstrates sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians. Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management. Participates as a peer reviewer, when requested. Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal. Successfully integrates patient care activities in Primary Care Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based Health Care (HBHC), and private nursing homes. Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients. Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS in a timely manner. Includes patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum; assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting. Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs. Documents administrative and clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner. Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact patient care or staff performance. Plans, implements, and evaluates care based on the specific requirements of the patient. Assesses veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills. Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
