Duties You will serve as a specialist in the planning, execution, and processing of hydrographic surveys that are conducted either in cooperation with foreign nation personnel or expeditionary surveys that directly support Fleet requirements. You will evaluate existing data holdings and determines survey requirements. You will make decisions to ensure the highest quality products possible are generated while meeting or exceeding the appropriate local and international standards. You will evaluate newly developed methods for hydrographic data editing, processing, and quality control and makes judgments as to their potential to increase the efficiency with which the branch's mission is accomplished. You will serve as an expert in and direct others in hydrographic and bathymetric survey planning to ensure the department effectively collects data that supports COCOM or other emergent requirements. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a US Citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. You will have to successfully complete an IHO Certified Category-A Certificate curriculum or hold an active ACSM/NSPS Certified Hydrographer qualification, as a condition of employment. You will have to complete the Hydrographer-in-Charge (MH1) command JQR within a period of not more than 2 years from reporting for duty. You may be required to spend up to 50% of each year on TDY travel providing technical instruction and assistance in geodetic/hydrographic/oceanographic survey work in various countries and U.S. waters. While on TDY, position may require overtime and/or unusual working hours and conditions. Proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required. You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license. Work may involve operating and driving government vehicles. You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with hydrographic and bathymetric data collection, editing, processing, and quality control. Experience compiling, analyzing, evaluating, and refining hydrographic, oceanographic, geodetic, navigational and bathymetric survey data. Experience evaluating new techniques and their potential improvement in satisfying established requirements. Experience in the planning, execution, and processing of hydrographic surveys that are conducted either in cooperation with foreign nation personnel or expeditionary surveys. Experience directing others in hydrographic and bathymetric survey planning. Experience managing and coordinating the editing, processing, and quality control of hydrographic and bathymetric data. Education Basic Education Requirement: Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or higher in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR A combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
