Summary

Please note: This is a pool, as needed position with no guarantee of hours.

Functions as vital member of the OR team assuming responsibility for the scrub position during surgical interventions. Maintains a safe environment by implement technical and aseptic practices according to AORN Standards and Central Washington Hospital policies and procedures. May perform as a unit receptionist by greeting visitors, answering telephones, and directing traffic. Protects confidentiality of patient information, prioritizes own workload. Maintains equipment readiness and supply levels throughout obstetrics area. Assists the licensed nurse in providing patient care for laboring patients, mothers, and newborns.

Essential Functions

  1. Address patients, visitors, families, and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful manner: display courtesy at all times.
  2. Respond quickly and appropriately to inquiries and requests.
  3. Assist co-workers without being asked.
  4. Display an unhurried and caring manner with visitors, families, and co-workers when performing duties.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of all patient-hospital or physician related information. Refrain from gossip and speak in low tones in all appropriate areas.
  6. Demonstrate a pleasing disposition and sensitivity to visitors, families, and co-workers.
  7. Below or at the accepted standard for unscheduled absences as outlined in HR8651.370.
  8. Perform related assignments as requested in order to promote positive visitor, family, and co-worker relations.
    • Communicate, cooperate and perform related duties with other co-workers in your department and in other departments in a courteous and efficient manner to achieve overall hospital goals and objectives.

  9. Patient, Significant Other, Public:
    • Notifies appropriate unit personnel of admissions.
    • Greets all persons coming to station; answers inquiries, directs and assists, takes messages, assists with flowers, gifts, and mail.
    • Directs patient/visitor complaints/concerns to appropriate personnel.
    • Maintains confidentiality and releases information only to authorized persons.
    • Explains and interprets policies/procedures when appropriate.
    • Facilitates flow of communication in a courteous, pleasant manner.
    • Assists visitors in and out of our department following the security guidelines outlined in policy number OF-8.
  10. Hospital Personnel, Co-Workers:
    • Cooperates with other personnel.
    • Receives/delivers phone messages.
    • Communicates patient information to patient's nurse in timely manner.
    • Consults/keeps Clinical Manager and/or Charge Nurse informed of activities/needs/problems of unit.
  11. Organizes and maintains patient record.
    • Assembles and prepares appropriate paper chart forms.
    • Maintains organization of paper additions to chart with all forms properly identified.
    • Enters pertinent information on patient profile.
    • Transcribes all physician orders in systematic fashion.
      • Enters orders and messages into computer hospital information system.
      • Coordinates patient transfer orders with ancillary services, receiving unit, and assures that all patient records/forms/stickers accompany patient to receiving unit.
    • During EMR downtime, refer to Nursing EMR downtime policy .
    • Continually maintains and organizes patient paper record.
    • Scans paper chart forms into the EMR
  12. Miscellaneous Clerical Duties:
    • Communicates admissions, discharges and transfers to appropriate departments.
      • At time of discharge, schedules follow-up appointments, post-discharge ancillary services.
      • Notifies appropriate departments of patient disposition through computer communications or phone.
    • Completes allergy alert process by making ID allergy bands and alert stickers.
    • Orders supplies for nursing station as directed.
    • Maintains unit information writer boards.
    • File policies and procedures and other documents as requested.
    • Maintains unit record logs. Files perinatal records.
    • Participates in extended computer downtime recovery team.
  13. OB Surgery Suite responsibilities:
    • Provide patient care applying principles of asepsis.
    • Learn surgical procedures and subjects relating to operating room/surgical patient.
    • Provides OB Scrub Call coverage when needed to cover vacations, leave of absences, weekend and holiday duty, absenteeism, emergencies, etc.
    • Provide safe, efficient environment for surgical patient.
    • Use surgical instruments and know their specific uses in procedures.
    • Function within limitations of licensure or certification.
    • Recognize own limitations and seek assistance accordingly.
    • Assist team members by setting up/maintaining sterile field; break down room following a case.
    • Locate supplies and equipment.
    • Recognize and report faulty equipment/unsafe conditions.
    • Demonstrate flexibility in response to changes in work volume, staffing, emergencies, or scheduling.
    • Respond within 20 minutes when on standby.
  14. May assist with direct/indirect patient care under supervision of licensed nurse: lifting, turning, transferring, meal trays, escorting, obtaining linen/supplies, completing audits as directed.
  15. Stocking responsibilities:
    • Check C/S room readiness daily and after each C/S.
    • Check C/S warmer for adequate blankets and liquids.
    • Maintain supply of C/S suture packs.
    • Stock labor rooms with necessary supplies.
    • Check emergency supplies in each labor room and the C/S room to include suction, oxygen, and baby supplies.
    • Restock delivery carts daily and after deliveries.
    • Prepare ID bracelets for babies.
    • Stock monitor carts.
    • Stock special trays: Exam tray.
  16. Routine Care:
    • Make nursery admit packs and nursery hats.
    • Escort patient to assigned room and assist with admission: request patient to obtain UA, admission vital signs and weight, orient patient to room, and place patient on external fetal monitor per RN request.
    • Obtain and record maternal vital signs per RN request.
    • Prepare PP room, transfer patient and belongings.
