Description Under direction of a nursing manager, to be scheduled as needed, to provide direct or indirect nursing care to hospital patients in a general or specialized nursing unit; and to perform related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs. BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination. EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classification: Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr Graduate's Degree $1.75/hr DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center Surgery Per Diem Registered Nurse III are represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for these positions only. There are currently three (3) Per Diem (Intermittent) vacancies. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OPENING DATE:January 3, 2024 CLOSING DATE: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore, the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs. Examples Of Duties Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Utilizing nursing process, plans and participates in providing daily patient care; Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications; Makes patient observations, records and reports all pertinent information; provides follow-through on judgement; Assists doctors in examination and treatment; Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift; Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of ancillary personnel and in the training of new personnel; As surgical nurse, orders, arranges and provides operating room instruments and supplies for surgeons, maintains sterility, positions patients for surgery, obtains x-rays and medications, maintains records and prepares reports; Ensures that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient and ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure (including surgical counts, time outs, positioning, and traffic control, and keeping a clutter free environment); Leads and coordinates all communications and activities among team members, including using the white board, coordinating the use of equipment, and contacting other providers when services are required, etc.; Prepares the patient for the procedure and handles the preparation for the operating room before the surgery takes place (preoperative activities include patient assessment, review of consent and test results, etc.); and communicates with physician onany concerns raised by these activities; Assesses the needs of the patient during the procedure and makes changes to the core plan as necessary to ensure the best outcome; Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals; and works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during surgery; Provides direction to other health care professionals and ancillary staff who are participating in the care of the patient; Provides oversight to other operating room personnel; May transport specimens that require diagnostic testing to the laboratory; and handles and cares for specimens and appropriately documents the disposition of the specimen; Orients qualified candidates and new personnel on hospital policies and procedures; and Performs other related duties as required. Typical Qualifications These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; AND, five (5) years of experience as a circulating operating room nurse. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain a current valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or licensure in another state with California licensure pending Must possess a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certificate PRIOR to the first day of employment Must obtaina Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification OR a Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) certification within 6 months of hire Must be willing and able to take after-hour calls and weekend calls. DESIRED Possession of aPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification Possession of an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification Possession of a Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of: the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; medicines and narcotics. Working ability to: plan and organize nursing care; train and supervise non-professional staff; establish and maintain confidence of patients and staff; work effectively in different hospital departments on shifts as required. Thorough knowledge of: the theories, techniques, and practices used in advanced nursing care of specialized units, including an acute care operating room; medical terminology; hospital routine and equipment; and medicines and narcotics. Working knowledge and proficiency with electronic medical records ("EMR") systems. Skill in: effective leadership, problem solving, collaboration, and communication; strong attention to detail, work in a high-pressure environment, and remain calm in a crisis,. Ability to: plan and organize nursing care with a high level of attention to detail, work in a high-pressure environment, remain calm in a crisis, and handle long, arduous work hours; orient new staff; be a self-starter; make critical decisions based on available information about the patient; coordinate the patient's health care; collaborate with physician and other health care professionals; direct the activities of other operating room personnel; maintain the confidentiality of patient/client information; establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with other staff members, patients, and their families in difficult situations; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
