POSITION TITLE: PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DEPARTMENT: PHARMACY REPORTS TO: Director of Pharmacy I. JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist the Pharmacy Technician participates in pharmaceutical care by assisting the pharmacist in drug preparation, drug distribution, purchasing and inventory control, drug packaging, and drug delivery. TELEPHONE SKILLS - Demonstrates hospital telephone etiquette by answering the phones promptly, courteously and identifying department and self. POLICIES/PROCEDURES- Is aware of and follows all hospital and department policies and procedures. TEAM WORK- Promotes positive co-worker relationships through team work and cooperation. Understands and supports the needs of individuals in 3. other departments and promotes conflict resolution. Shares information, work knowledge and experience with coworkers, physicians and students in a non-threatening manner. Offers assistance and promptly responds to requests. PRODUCTIVITY -Maintains high productivity and performs efficiently regardless of whether the work volume is high or low. Appropriately prioritizes work activities. Responds to difficult situations with self-control and a positive attitude. Makes decisions independently and knows when to ask for assistance. Exercises good judgment and arrives at sound decisions. Documentation is accurate, complete and legible. DRUG DISTRIBUTION: Fills new orders accurately Fills medications for items not in the automated dispensing machines (ADM) Responsible for basic system troubleshooting and correction of minor problems Enters data into the computerized pharmacy system and runs appropriate lists and labels Delivers medications and picks up medication orders, discontinued or expired medications Maintains the inpatient dispensing areas Prepares and maintains applicable records including: temperature logs, quality control logs, packaging records Timely monthly expiration date checks Prepares reports and restocks the ADM STERILE PRODUCTS: Prepares IV Admixtures, irrigations, and parenteral nutrition. Maintains sterile preparation Prepares IV Labels Updates computer scheduling of intravenous fluids and IV piggybacks PACKAGING Prepares extemporaneous packaging of oral solids and liquids, labels and records in packaging log PURCHASING AND INVENTORY CONTROL Maintains proper drug inventory levels and orders appropriate quantities. Prepares purchase requisitions. Uses computerized ordeering system accurately. BILLING Appropriately charges for items not in ADMs, including billing the ACM reports. Places credits for returned IVS, IVPBS and medications timely. Charges/credits for items on fill lists and catch-up lists Performs other duties as assigned. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE MANDATORY: Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the California State Board of Pharmacy PREFERRED: Shall have 1 year hospital Pharmacy Technician experience PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Standing and walking 80%; sitting 20% of time Lifting and carrying of supplies up 24 pounds including boxes, equipment, unit dose cassettes, and IV solution and stooping or kneeling; (e.g.pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers). Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity necessary for typing and computer order entry Normal range of hearing and vision to perform work and communication.
