Position Type Federal Work-Study Job Title Peer Coach - Office of Retention & Academic Advising (FWS) Posting Number STPO110 Grade/Level Level 5 - Distinctive Student Assistant Hourly Rate for Job Posting 9.75 Anticipated Employment Start Date for Position 08/12/2024 Posting Category Student - Federal Position details Job Summary A student peer coach plays a vital role in the Eagle Success Program and Academic Recovery Program by working one-on-one with students to aid in disseminating information pertinent to the program and helping participants (students) stay on task with program requirements and classroom obligations. The peer coach serves as a liaison between professional staff, who provide intrusive academic advising/counseling, and the student. The role of the peer coach is not to take the place of the professional staff but to serve as an additional facilitator for keeping the student on track and connected to campus resources. Further, the peer coach will not be involved in any direct academic advising. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities will typically involve highly individualized tasks and skill sets. Examples in this category include, but are not limited to RA's, Eagle guides, academic tutors, general services workers, custodial workers, and agricultural services. This position will generally require one on one contact with internal and external customers. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Other Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for record keeping and organization of student files. Accurately documents all information obtained from students regarding academic and personal issues pertinent to academic success. Regularly follows up with students regarding progress by in person meetings, phone conversations or through electronic means. Aids students in identification of internal, controllable factors that may pose or have posed obstacles to academic success. Helps students devise success plans to resolve identified barriers to academic success under the direct supervision of professional staff. Connects students to necessary resources that aid in being academically successful (i.e. tutoring, career services, etc.). Serves as a "coach" for encouragement Minimum Requirements Must be a current MSU student Must maintain satisfactory academic progress Must feel comfortable using nominal judgment and possess basic analytical or decision-making skills Must have the ability to understand and to follow written and verbal instructions Must be able to operate equipment relevant to the distinctive position Knowledge of the unique requirements of the placement location. Additional Desirable Qualifications Excellent communication skills Strong organization skills Ability to build working rapport with peers Experience in working with diverse populations Capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality Completion of FERPA training Extensive knowledge of MSU resources and campus community Preferred G.P.A 3.0 or higher Physical Requirements Working Conditions Special Information/Instructions to Applicants
