Job Summary:
Be responsible for the day-to-day payroll function ensuring accurate and on time payroll processing. The role requires a payroll professional who has successfully implemented best pay practices and workflow improvements resulting in accurate and timely processing of payroll. This position also provides a variety of support functions necessary to the efficiency of HR operations including performing duties that require knowledge of standard Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) benefits, practices, procedures and policies.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:
  • The Payroll Manager will be responsible for the bi-weekly processing of payroll for all NEIU employees and will report to the Deputy Director of Payroll and Benefits.
  • Respond to employees in regard to payroll questions and issues related to payroll transactions, adjustments, retro pay, payroll check cancellations, reissues, check distribution, W2s, reissued tax forms, voluntary/involuntary withholdings, terminal benefits and other related questions.
  • Review, process, interpret, and maintain proper documentation and authorization forms for additions, changes, or deletions. Troubleshoot questions from employees to determine the best method of resolving issues. Work to ensure issues are resolved in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and timely. Maintain detailed and organized payroll records and processing steps.
  • Review and process changes to employee information including but not limited to Direct Deposit, W2 addresses and other requests. Process changes when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications:

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Any one or any combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the following categories:

A. College coursework in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Work experience balancing payroll totals, and researching and preparing special reports for senior management.

3. Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience assisting with all aspects of planning, operations, and control of a payroll office (such as Assistant Payroll Manager).

Departmental Preferences:
  • 2+ years of payroll processing experience in Workday
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Advanced Workday knowledge
  • Solid understanding of payroll best practices
  • Ability to work with all levels within the organization
  • Ability to maintain extreme confidentiality
  • Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfortable working independently and with a team
  • Ability to remain flexible and calm in a changing environment

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Hours may vary depending on departmental needs)
