ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manages a public park including grounds maintenance, golf course, public pools, athletic courts, playground, forestry, horticulture, restaurant, concession, campground, and recreational programs and activities

Exercises supervision over subordinate personnel

Natural Areas Parks Manager (Land Management)

The Natural Areas Parks Manager reports to the Natural Areas Division Parks Administrator. The Manager oversees supervisory and frontline staff responsible for land management activities at Jefferson Memorial Forest and within other natural areas managed by the Division. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, development and implementation of natural resource management plans for the management of natural spaces; trail planning and construction; oversight of related volunteer activities; coordination with other natural areas staff and community partners; representing the Division in the community on issues affecting land management activities; overseeing contractors, as necessary, and managing capital park projects; seeking and managing various grants and contracts associated with land management activities; supporting monitoring of conservation easements as a Division representative of the Louisville/Jefferson County Environmental Trust.

Examples of Duties

UNDER GENERAL DIRECTION

Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures

Manages grounds maintenance, recreational programs, playgrounds, swimming pools, store, restaurants, concessions, campgrounds, rental facilities and operations

Plans and organizes park events and functions including festivals, meetings, and outings

Prepares and deposits funds

Prepares estimates and specifications for the procurement of supplies, services and capital improvements, and participates in the bid selection process

Inspects golf courses, identifies turf diseases, and recommends horticultural remedies to resolve turf problems

Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning grounds maintenance

Evaluates programs for effectiveness and recommends modifications to achieve goals and objectives

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Agriculture

Business Administration

Environmental Science

Forestry

Horticulture

Landscape Architecture

Park Management

Public Administration

Recreation

Related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Three years of park or facilities management, landscaping, horticulture, forestry, or grounds maintenance experience, including two years of supervisory experience

EQUIVALENCY

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, but must include two years of supervisory experience

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work

Supplemental Information

DESIREABLES:

The preferred candidate will have a good knowledge of ecological management principles including species identification and a passion for improving park natural spaces for the enjoyment of all residents. The candidate will possess excellent leadership and communications skills and be eager to contribute positively in a team environment. Desirable experience includes familiarity with work order and geographical information systems; project management; volunteer engagement; and general knowledge of construction and skilled trades principles. Certified Park and Recreation Professional certification preferred, but not required.
