Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Painter (7346) within our Operations Division.

Operations Division
The Operations Division delivers essential services around the clock with street cleaning, street and sewer repair and maintenance, and repair services for civic buildings and structures. Operations staff also provides graffiti removal, sidewalk maintenance, community partnerships to advance cleaning and greening initiatives, code enforcement, workforce development and apprenticeship programs, urban forestry care and tree planting, and landscape services.

Building Repair
Provides quality professional construction, repair and remodeling for City-owned facilities.
We provide emergency-repair services at all times , ensuring that Police, Fire and other Public Safety operations are fully functional.

Job Description

Under general direction, as a Painter, you will perform skilled painting work on the exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures, and equipment which includes providing daily painting services to the San Francisco Public Library.

Important and Essential Duties:
As a Painter, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Applying paints and other protective or decorative finishes to various exterior or interior of buildings, including painting and finishing of partitions, window casings, doors, cabinets, cases, and woodwork.
  • Painting street equipment, traffic or airfield markings, playground, facilities, and other outdoor structures.
  • Preparing surfaces for painting, including erecting and hanging scaffolding; removing all paint or varnish by scraping or sanding; washing, cleaning, and patching surfaces and otherwise preparing surfaces, such as wood, metal, glass, stucco, wallboard, brick, cement, tape, and drywall for painting.
  • Mixing and preparing paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs, and other preservatives.
  • Selecting, blending, and matching colors in proper proportions.
  • Assembling and operating various types of painting equipment, including spray guns, pressure washers, grinders, high-reach power, and other equipment.
  • Cleaning and maintaining painting brushes and equipment.
  • Safely handling and disposing of hazardous materials.
  • Occasionally planning work programs, including estimating and ordering materials and equipment required for assigned projects.
  • Delivering paint, materials, and equipment to the worksite.
  • May occasionally plan work programs, including estimating and ordering materials and equipment required for assigned projects.
  • Preparing estimates, work orders, and other job-related documentation.
Working Conditions:
This position requires sustained physical effort with considerable standing, bending, and occasionally heavy lifting; working in confined spaces; and intermittent exposure to hazardous heights and poorly ventilated areas, streets, and roadways.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Training:
Completion of a recognized Painters' apprenticeship program.

Experience:
Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level Painter which included a combination of painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures equipment, roadways and airfields. Experience solely in automotive or sign painting does not qualify.

License and Certification:
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California driver's license.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver's license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.

Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience can be substituted for the apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

Notes:
  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
