In this role, you'll work closely with a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other OR staff, to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care. You'll be responsible for managing a range of equipment and technology, from anesthesia machines to surgical tools and monitoring devices, and for documenting every aspect of the surgical procedure, including the patient's vital signs, medications administered, and any complications that may arise.

  • The OR-RN will ensure that the operating room is appropriately sanitized, well-stocked, and furnished with all necessary tools and supplies before each surgical operation. Additionally, they must oversee that the surgical team adheres to proper infection control procedures.
  • During the surgery, the OR-RN is accountable for aiding the surgeon as necessary, which may include passing instruments, monitoring the patient's vital signs, and administering required medications.
  • The OR-RN will continue monitoring the patient's vital signs and ensuring their stability throughout the surgery. They may also administer fluids or medication when required.
  • Responsible for managing the various equipment used during the surgical operation, such as anesthesia machines, surgical tools, and monitoring devices.
  • Document all aspects of the surgical procedure, including the patient's vital signs, medications administered, and any complications that occur.
  • Communicates with the surgical team throughout the procedure to ensure everyone is on the same page and that the patient is receiving appropriate care.
  • Prepare the patient for surgery by providing preoperative education and making sure that the patient comprehends the procedure and its anticipated outcomes.

Candidate requirements

  • Must have a nursing degree from an accredited institution. This can include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with additional certification in preoperative nursing.
  • Must hold a current, unrestricted license to practice nursing. This requires passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and meeting other state-specific requirements.
  • While certification is not always required, many OR RNs choose to pursue certification in preoperative nursing through organizations such as the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) or the Association of preoperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
  • The position requires prior experience in preoperative nursing, either through a formal preoperative nursing program or through on-the-job training.
  • Must have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills. They must also be able to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
