Videos Help Duties Utilizes the nursing process to identify individual patient needs and problems and to develop implement and evaluate plans of patient care. Provides professional skilled, competent nursing care specific to age of the patient (adult, geriatric, obstetric, pediatric, neonate) to meet physical, emotional, spiritual and social-cultural needs of the patient, by means of direct care and teaching. Observes and assesses patient's clinical condition: recognizes, identifies and interprets serious situations and immediately implements proper action. Documents observations, nursing interventions, responses to therapeutic measures and status of coordinated activities between nursing and other professional disciplines utilizing the approved hospital format. Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as resuscitation units, respiratory therapy apparatus, monitoring devices (cardiac monitors, oxygen monitors, etc.), IV pumps and regulators, temperature regulating devices, suction, blood glucose monitors, mist tents, etc. Administers therapeutic treatment measures such as medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, treatments and procedures. Prepares patient, completes or assists as appropriate during procedure and evaluates results. Participate in staff development activities including orientation, mentorship and sharing feedback from government sponsored training opportunities. Accepts responsibilities as team leader and/or charge nurse. In the absence of the supervisor, accepts those supervisory and administrative responsibilities when required. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree From Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): GS-5: Applicants must meet one of the following qualification requirements: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; or Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one (1) full year of professional nursing experience. GS-7: In addition to the above Basic Requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level); Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or Completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program. GS-9: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or Possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and at least one (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above): Independently applying nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess nursing needs of assigned general medical and surgical patient development of multidisciplinary care plans to address patient needs; Ability to recognize and implements proper action in response to changes in patient medical condition. Experienced in providing guidance and direction to other nursing staff members and including planning, allocation and adjustment of resources in response to workload and priority changes.
