Job purpose

The Nurse Educator has a critical responsibility for functioning within the context and framework of the Nursing Professional Development, Scope and Standards practice as approved by the American Nurses Association.

The specialized professional nursing practice at Fair Haven Community Health Care fosters professional role competence, and professional growth of learners in a variety of settings; supports lifelong learning; utilizes tools, theories, skills and knowledge to improve healthcare practice for all learners.

Duties and responsibilities

The Nurse Educator works in partnership with nursing leadership and collaborates with the healthcare team to facilitate training education and development by assessing, planning, implementing coordinating and evaluating projects and programs for staff, faculty, patient populations and the community. This position is an essential member of the nursing leadership team. Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assesses learning needs based on regulatory requirements, evidence based practice and individual identified needs. Utilizes creative strategies and adult learning principles
  • Collaborates with members of the nursing leadership team to assess learning needs, develops programs, monitors clinical competency and supports action plans. Represents nursing in the development of inter-professional learning activities
  • Promotes professional nursing practice and quality patient care according to the ANA standards of practice. Endorses the theory-based approach through the continuum of practice from Novice to Expert
  • Serves as a role model and guide for the professional development of nurses
  • Develops and facilitates initial and ongoing competencies
  • Develops, implements and manages competency based orientation
  • Provides supportive consulting and participates in planned and unplanned process changes
  • Develops, educates, and implements quality improvement initiatives and outcomes
Qualifications

BSN and enrollment in a Master's program with degree completion within two years of hire date is required. Master's degree highly preferred.

Licensed Registered Nurse from the CT DPH obtained prior to hire date; valid CT State Driver's License; a minimum of five years of active clinical nursing experience; and BLS also required (ACLS preferred or obtained within one year of start). One year of relevant teaching experience, nursing staff development and/or specialty area is preferred.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, statistical and computer knowledge. Knowledge of principles of teaching the adult learner. Ability to effectively connect with individuals

Specialty Certification in Nursing Professional Development is highly desirable.

Physical requirements

Physical Demands: Requires walking, bending, sitting, standing, writing, reading, telephone use, data input into computer, pulling medical records, Mental Demands: Ability to cope with continual changing priorities under potentially stressful conditions. Manual Dexterity Required: Ability to use a keyboard, telephone.
